I use some cinnamon in water, let it sit on low heat on the stove. You can try using pumpkin pie spice as well.

Not sure if you'd really call it a "trick" or even if their is a distinct recipe for it.
I do this every holiday season, but they dont' even really need to use the stove...it works really well w/a crock pot-and they even make "small" potpourric crocks--both of which would be safer than the stove.

Either way....all they really need to do is put some water in a small pot and throw in...really whatever they want! Some different ingredients that I use are:
cinnamon sticks (STICKS- not powder)
Cloves (Actual cloves-not powder)
Ginger
All spice (Has a little of everything!)
Vanilla
Orange or lemon slices
My mom even uses cranberries!

It's just a "pot-luck" combination of aromas, so they just need to trial and error. Just tell them to keep an eye on it thoughout the evening because they will need to add water now and again as it will evaporate and then all the ing will burn and ruin the pan.

Simple- just boil a pan of water, turn it down to simmer or warm and throw in a few cinnamon sticks. You can add other things if you like, cloves, orange peel, ect... Just be sure to check it frequently, so the water don't evaporate- you'll have a whole different smell then.lol. Happy Holidays.

Just boil some water with a couple shakes of cinnamon in it, you can also add nutmeg or vanilla. My favorite is to add cloves. Thats REALLY nice. Make sure there's a lot of water in it and check it often to make sure it doesn't evaporate and burn your pan. My mom does this with her woodstove, just uses cinnamon and it smells SO good! I remember her doing it on the stove, too, when I was young.
