Can I extend it out with a flexible shaft and tighten it from outside? tf i want to tighten hard what are alternate methods?

I would suggest staying clear of any flexi-drive tools as you will loose alot of the energy through the material the extension is made of, it is after all flexible for a reason - it's not good at transmitting energy. - I would suggest something like a universal joint (like CV joint in your car) this will ultimately transmit more of the energy.

However, when working with lathes/mills etc. the reality is that lots of maintenance has to be done by dismantling sections of the beast - sad i know but painfully true...

What's the machine? There is a tool for everything. Sometimes you have to make your own tool, but there is a tool for everything. You just need to get the right tool. There are plenty of extensions and u-joints and such as well as flexible drives. Good luck.

Menard or Homedepot have screw drivers longer than std.
I got one about 16" long. If that is adequate for you, try it.
