I have heard this stated before as, there are only two religions; Buddhism and Christianity. Because the other Eastern religions are off shoots or closely related to Buddhism. The religions of self-attainment are lumped together as part of Buddhism and the theistic religions have basically evolved into Christianity. It's easy to put Buddhism down and feel superior if you're a Christian, but there's a lot to be said for developing a sensitive and aware consciouness, apart from any rewards it may or may not give you. So many Christians just have their heads up their a$$. I was at a Bible study a couple of weeks ago and they were talking about gay marriage and I said it must be hard to be gay. To have those feelings and not be able to control it and have the whole world hate you because of it. They completely jumped all over me and refused to understand what I was saying. I was not saying I was for gay marriage, because I'm not. I was just saying it doesn't hurt to exercise a little empathy. But they were having an orgy of self-righteousness and refused to hear what I was saying. They just went on and on with their usual wrong notions about how being gay is a choice, as if anyone would choose that. I find a lot of Christians to be stupid, straight up. I'm sorry. But, it's true.

There's a book I read a few years ago that I really liked. It covers the major religions.
It's called "Mankinds search for God" published by Watchtower Society.
If you live in the Us, the number to their office in Brooklyn, NY is 718-560-5000. You can also get it through any local congregation or Witness.
You can also check out their website at www.watchtower.org
All their publications are free of charge and their work is done by volunteers. Everything is supported by voluntary donations.

I recommend "Sourcebook of the World's Religions".
Each section is written by people *in* the religion described, so it's a good way to learn not ony about various religions (history, etc.), it also gives one a glimpse into the "beingness" of each religion, if that makes any sense.
You can get it online:
http://www.amazon.com/Sourcebook-Worlds-Religions-Interfaith-Spirituality/dp/1577311213/sr=8-1/qid=1165693663/ref=sr_1_1/102-7900236-9684951?ie=UTF8&s=books

For a start try...RELIGION FOR DUMMIES.
It has the basics for a great many religions...how it started, how many members, what they believe, some differences and some thing they share.
