I don't believe he was saying
God caused these events to happen.

It seems like a very good idea, It obviously has done nothing to prevent such disasters. I am sure some work on the dikes and decent civil action plans would helped New Oleans more than all the prayers and sympathy did.

I'd say it doesn't look like its been helping us. Good and bad things will happen in the US and the world with or without any particular phrase being in or out of the pledge.

I'm not sure he is saying God caused these events. Rather, with all this going on, do we want to abandon God? No matter what your convictions, most people want some kind of authority in their lives. For me, it's God; for others, it's civil laws, etc.
