Medication, although helpful, should be the last resort for anyone suffering from sleep deprivation or insomnia. Allbeit frustrating, sleep deficiency can be alleviated through scientific (or even homeopathic) ways. Sometimes, false insomnia is also a factor in which a person sleeps but doesn't realize it. Consider these options and try the ones you're most comfortable with for a week.
1) Remove sleep inhibitors from your diet. Coffee is the #1 go to substance when people think about caffiene, but many other substances will keep you tossing and turning at night. Iced tea, soda, hot chocolate, and sweets will all affect your restlessness. Most of these items are vices that are difficult to remove from one's diet, so just attempt to back.
2) Fix a schedule. Many things in this category will greatly increase your chances of a good night sleep. First off, go to bed at the same time every night. Your body works in a cycle called "Circadian Rhythem". This means that every 95 minutes, your body is primed for resting. You can reset this cycle by setting a standard to for rest. Your body will become accostomed to it and self-adjust.
3) Food again. Don't eat four hours before bed. Digestion is an active process for your body and is likely to keep you awake or disturb your sleep.
4) Set your alarm correctly. The snooze button is an ineffecient tool that should never have been made. The silence between alarms lasts for about 9-15min but your brain needs at least 30 to return to sleep. Wake up when you need to be awake, not when you want to go back to sleep.
5) Clean the sheets, cleanse the room. Eveyone knows a clean bed and room is a nicer environment to rest it, but it's healthier too. Dust mites, dander, and other allergens are horrible enemies of a good night's sleep.
6) Don't watch the T.V. Television is a great tool to use to unwind from work, but it is often engaging or thought-provoking. Reading relaxes your body and sets your mind in a more dreamlike state. You'll start to nod of about 45min into it so head to bed an hour earlier. Side note, don't play music; your mind actively listens to rhythems and therefore remains busy.
If you must add items to your diet to assist in sleeping, medications are last on the list. Simple substances such as chamomile or chicken will have the same effect. Chamomile releases melatonin and all birds (not just turkey) have tryptophan in them (the Thanksgiving-coma drug).
If, after one week of concious effort, you have not been able to adjust your sleep schedule then you should consult a physician. Do NOT just pick up a box of sleeping pills and your local market and hope for the best. Many are not FDA approved and hence have not been scientifically tested. The best thing that could happen in such a case is that you lose your money. Recent lawsuits involving sleep aids site catatonic states, nocturnal urination, prolonged effects, addiction, and phantom eating (sleep eating whole sticks of butter and other nonsensical items). It's your body and mind, you have the ability to control it. Good luck, sweet dreams, and I hope this helps.

I suggest something natural, as opposed to chemical. The problem with chemicals is the chance of becoming dependent on them. By nautral, I mean Valerian Root. I take Swiss Natural Sources Herbal Sleepwell. I take these "sleeping tablets" sometimes, and I find two tablets usually help put me down an hour later. But do NOT mix with alcohol! A sip or three of Camomile tea relaxes one too, and can be taken safely with your Valerian Root tablets.
Bon soir! Have a good night's sleep, nutan_nut!

Hi,
Try having a glass or warm water before you go to bed.
And then do some deep breathing exercises when ur in bed.
just sit on the bed and breath in through one nostril and out through the other (block one at a time and breath in, then block the other and breath out)
Then take a deep breath and close ur eyes and place a finger in each ear. Then breathe out by humming for as long as you can. keep you mouth and eyes shut. you should feel the vibration all over ur face and head. Do this 3-5 times.
These exercises will help you relax ur mind. it hardly takes 4-5 mins to complete them so try them out if only to humor me.
Also try and eat atleast 3 hours before your target bed time. same with any exercise that you might be doing.
I would avoid any TV or Reading some Entertaining book. Just shut off all lights and put on some light instrumental music if want ( low volume)
Also try set a time to go to bed and a time to get up. Stick to it. Even if you ar not able to sleep lie in bed and keep the lights off.
Force your self to get up at the designated hour. and avoid all napping. This will reset the body clock that has been confused will all erratic hours.
I would also avoid Caffine, alchol and spicy food for dinner. (my caffine deadline is 5 pm)
I was having major sleeping problems and was sleepy through the day while being up and alert at night. These steps really helped.
I would not recommed any pills and chemical sleep aids. however these steps are totally natural and cand/should be done even if you are going to pop a pill.
Hope this helps. it certainly helped me.
sweet dreams

Try avoiding taking sleeping tablet if you can.You are advised to follow few sleep hygiene rules which are not to sleep during the day, avoid watching television in your bed room, use your bed only for sleeping and sexual activity, dont consume caffeine or brain stimulant drinks at night, void your bladder before sleep. This resolves sleep difficulties in almost half of the cases. If it doesnt help seek advise of your doctor because there are tablets available for insomnia which are best taken under supervision.
Hope this is helpful.
regards.

Depression is the major cause of this condition.I have helpped a friends son who was having this problem along with mild depression due to peer pressure in college.i gave him Brahmi capsules and it hellpe him.
another friend got help from biochemical pills kaliphos 6X.
sleeping tablets DONOT give permanet help. they become addictive.

Personally I would look at other methods to try to get to sleep before you resort to sleeping pills. Most of them can cause you to have a dependency. Try to locate the source of why you can't sleep. If you have a lot of things on your mind than try to find a way to vent these feelings, either in a journal or to a friend.
I highly recommend seeing a doctor before you start sleeping pills. You could have a medical reason on why you can't sleep.
Also take a look at your sleeping patterns. Do you find yourself taking a lot of naps? If so you are doing most of your sleeping during the day and that is why you can't sleep at night. If that is the case, instead of taking naps make yourself stay up so you can fall asleep at night.
But like I said explore your other options before you try sleeping pills. Than if you need them talk to a doctor so they can prescribe you sleeping pills.

Do lots of work that is both mentally & physically challenging. This is sure to put you in deep sleep , if the work is sufficiently challenging & done for sufficiently long duration. The duration of the work is important here, the longer the better.

i'm having this same problem. i just have too much going on, and too much on my mind, that my body will not allow me to sleep. i've tried counting sheep and all that, doesn't work. tried listening to relaxing music, didn't work. i tried alot...still not much sleep. don't get me wrong, i still get some sleep...just not much. maybe 4 hours. don't do what i did though. DO NOT force yourself to stay awake for 3 days so you will have to sleep. don't do that.
what type of pills though? sorry, wish i could answer that, but i haven't tried pills yet, and i probably won't. but maybe I will...thankx for the idea.
