My 7wk. old male is really growing up the last 24hrs. Last night he staddled my lower leg and started to hump. I dont know if this is normal for a puppy at this age. I sure hope this is normal. I tell him No, pull him off, and distract him with a toy. Thank you!!

Yes it's normal. At this age it is more of a dominance issue than sexual. If you want him to stop, tell him NO! in a firm voice (as in, even if you were saying something nice, it would sound angry). Do not reward him with a toy. Ignoring him for a few moments is good, anything to establish your dominance. Other things that can establish dominance are always eating something (even just an apple) before giving him food or rubbing his belly while he is on his back. Do not allow him to stare at you either, he is trying to illustrate his authority. He is probably "willing" you to do something, like give him food. Tell him NO!
And of course, don't forget to reinforce good behavior by talking in a friendly voice, petting, or treats.

It is normal. Humping is not sexual behaviour, it is a show of dominance and can be found in both males and females. If your dog humps another male, he's not gay; he's just saying "I'm the boss". (You may also find that he has started humping rugs/cushions/etc as well, so he's basically exerting his dominance over a pillow.) This behaviour should not be tolerated towards a human. You could tell him off, or lead him quietly into a room and leave him for small amounts of time when he does it. There are many different methods to check this; most puppy training books will have answers.

That is about all you can do, or squirt him with a cold water bottle when he does it. I am not sure about puppies, but we breed horses and the colts would start mounting their mom or anything around at about 2 1/2 months.
After a second thought- I don't know if you want to give him a toy afterwards. He may start to associate humping you with getting a toy and attention from you, which actually encourages the behavior. I would say no, push him off and ignore him.

Humping isn't always of a sexual nature in dogs. It's also a way of showing dominance. He sounds like that's what he's doing. You definitely need to make sure you're the Alpha, not him. For example, when taking him outside, you must walk through the door first...not follow him out the door. Dogs will step up to fill the role of leader, even if they don't really want to, because that is their instince and nature. A lot of dogs are relieved when their owner steps into the role of leader. I hope this helps!

Get up and leave when he does it. Attention through discipline is still attention and therefore a reward for bad behavior. At this age, it is NOT sexual, it is a dominance behavior. Females sometimes hump too. Dachshunds can be very headstrong independent little buggers. Read up on pack psychology and canine dominance behavior.

LOL you're having a lot of fun today. My avatar looks kinda like me but my hair is getting quite long now. Never been mistaken for female but some people have thought I am younger :-) Oh and you are far too sexy to be mistaken for a male or a little girl ;-)

yep it's a normal thing, it's not a sexual thing to him at that age, it only means your doxie has had too much activity and has gotten too wound up. try calming him down with a chew toy, or picking him up and snuggling with him. he will calm down and that behavior will stop. no need to tell him no, he won't understand what you mean, cuz to him he's just 'over-stimulated'. i have a doxie, he's done this. i've learned over time how much activity he can handle without it being too much. when company comes is another time your pup can get too excited. give him a bit of time playing with each person, then scoop him up and hold him in your lap til he calms back down. i wouldn't let him continue to hump your leg while everyone laffs. my son thought it was funnier than heck, but i still scooped my pup up and held him til he calmed down. ;)

*added.. at this age what your pup is doing has nothing to do with dominance. perhaps at a later age, yes... but he's just a baby that gets too excited and doesn't know yet when enough is enough. help him learn to calm himself down.

When young male dogs hump...it is nothing sexual. This is playing. I gave my pup his big pad that goes in his crate for comfort...and he humps it and chews it all day long. Just give him something big and soft...an alternative to your leg.
