Personally they iritate me. I don't like religion thrown in my face, and I feel horrible for those who are subjected to these practices. What do you think about it? Thoughts and opinions.

The missionaries I am referring to are the Christian ones. I am well aware of some of the religious customs around the world.

I will allow that they do help villages, and teach children to read and write, bring in medical care...ect. But they also crush previous religious belifs. To agree with one of my responders, they are a double edged sword.

Missionaries, to me, are the tools of the close-minded and god-blinded who attempt to (and sometimes succeed) wipe out entire cultures just because their god tells them that it is a "moral obligation." They oftentimes also have a "holier-than-thou" attitude that just gets under the skin of people of different faiths, who are often treated as stupid and spoken to condescendingly. (Of course, this is only referring to those that are obsessive over "converting" others, not those that just attempt once and are done once they reach a certain point.)
So, I dislike them greatly, if you haven't noticed, but only for their obsession with spreading religious belief. If they are doing good things in relation to the poverty-stricken and whatnot, then good for them. But once they start preaching that non-believers HAVE TO convert only on the basis of their opinion (no actual evidence to the people of other religious beliefs), then I start getting annoyed.
Note: If I seemed close-minded in the beginning, there's a reason for that... I was kind of stuck with the older idea of "missionaries" (those who were converting people by means of violence and destruction). I just recently had to read the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Abache (sorry if the author's name is spelled incorrectly; I tried to remember it from memory), which was about how Christian missionaries converted an entire African village. Of course, the time period isn't the modern times, which makes my definition of "missionary" outdated by quite a bit, so I tried to fix it up a little. Sorry again.

I think missionaries are a double edged sword, really. I mean it is wonderful that people go out and want to help others that need help, but it all sounds like a publicity stunt or recruitting tactics when you hear someone say that the missionaries will only help people who convert to their religion. Of course the people could take the charity and not accept the faith in their heart - but when they look back on that event they will surely remember that Christians were the ones who helped them when they were down. More marketing?
Of course, I don't know if they force people to join before they get aid, but I have heard that from some individuals. It kind of shows us either the brilliant political and marketing skills of the organizers of the Church or how kind work is a very powerful thing.
Peace!
Later...
Yes, that is another aspect. Do they venture into remote locations and affect the cultures of others who do not wish it? Or are they coming to the rescue of communities that are struggling? I don't know. Do you?

I have been a missionary 7 months out of this year, and I don't throw religion in others face. I simply set an example of what Christ is like. A missionary does a lot more than just talk about the Gospel. My job was in maintenance and teaching school. How does repairing something or teaching a child to read constitute throwing religion in your face?

There are all types of missionaries, but it seems to me that you are referring to the door to door type who won't leave very fast.
Some missionaries do good work by bringing food and medical aid to 3rd world countries, or help them build houses.
Of course missionaries will try to convert you, but you should at least give them normal human respect as long as they respect you.

There are numerous types of missionaires, as to what religion they preach. Of which are you refering?
Are you aware that in certain areas you would killed if you didn't convert to a particular religion? Doesn't that make preaching a bit more tolerable?
I had to laugh at your selection of terms for contrast..
grudingly admit... yes they teach kids to read and write bring meds etc
But
They crush their religious beliefs... lol
Again, Do you not realize that certain religious zealots will torture then murder anyone(men, women, children) who refuse to join their religion?

First of all Christians are not forcing anyone to believe. Missionaries from our community risk their life in places of war. One got killed in Somalia. In Albania one told me they had to feed 1000 refugees with lots of infants with no shelter no food no basic needs. All they could do is pray. And somehow they managed.
In other countries schools and hospitals are been build, orphans are taking care of, they give information on aids, circumcision of women, infant girls killing
These people take the word of Jesus to those who need comfort what is wrong with that? The message of the gospel is all peaceful.

Missionaries do not 'throw' religion in your face, that was a lie. Just because you may be invited to attend meetings, is not 'throwing' anything in your face. These people are sincere and they hurt when people do not except Jesus as their Lord and Savior. And just because someone talks about the Bible, or quotes verses, is not 'throwing' religion in you face, either.
