Girl wonder, why should religious people be governed by secular values? They put forward secularism as if it is neutral, but it is not, it is also a belief system

I haven't met an atheist that wants other people to live by thier values but the values of a good theist and a good atheist are going to be similar because the athiest understands its ok to be good morally for no reason than just being good and the theist will follow the 10 commandments and behave well (not to say wihtout them they would misbehave) So secularist values and theist values are similar (excluding following god or the sabbath)
Most atheist want to just be left alone and I think that can be said for most christains as far as their values

we can look at religion all day and beliefs but in the end were all people just trying to do whats best for us and our families/friends

The United States government is a secular government and it should remain as that. To make laws that follow the teachings of one faith over another faith is not fair. People say that we are "Christian" nation, but this just is NOT the fact at all.

Many of the fathers of this country were not Christians. They were, in fact, deists. Jefferson said that his best accomplishment of all time was the addition of freedom of religion to the bill of rights. We have a freedom to believe and practice as we want to. The government has a seperation of church and state. Making laws that are basically the bedroom behavioral laws is just unfair. Making a law that supports prayer in school would also mean that you would have to either make the prayers so non-religious that it was be a little silly or tit would have to make it favor one god over another, which again is not fair.

People want Creationism taught in public schools when it was meant to be a faith story. It would be taught as a science story by people that may or may not put the faith side to it. This is completely disregarding what it was meant to be. Again, this isn't right.

Why do you lump together everyone? What about people that simply aren't Christians? Not everything is not a Christian is an atheist you know. Atheists and others don't want to live by a certain religion's values because we are in a place that IS SECULAR.

Before you tell me that I am just a faithless heathen. Let me tell you something. I am a Christian.

Because secular values basically mean don't hurt people. Whereas religious values often involve hurting people for no apparent reason. So everyone should have a secular value system.

Consider the following: religious people make up about 90% of the population in the US, and they are more inclined to follow religious teachings on morality and value than secular (gov't) laws. About 99% of the American prison system is made up of religious people. Atheists and non-religious people are about 10% of the population, and follow a non-religious, secular code of ethics - mainly, don't hurt people. They only make up less than 1% of the prison population. Therefore, if everyone followed a secular code of ethics, we would have FAR fewer people in jail or committing crimes.

1. It is spelled athEist
2. What is your point?
3. Imposed religious "values" differ by which religion is doing the imposing. Secular values, whatever that means, would presumably be the set of values that the majority of people agree to follow. For instance, we all generally agree it is not a good thing to rape, rob or kill others...that is NOT a religious belief, it is just part of naturally evolved human behaviour. If the only thing that keeps you from doing the above is your "religious belief", then I feel very sorry for you.

secularism is neutral

india is a secular state, 80% of the population is hindu-

society should not be goverend by religious vales but by values that are natural to humans because religion can sometimes forget those
religion creates discrimination, unless it preaches tolerance like hinduism/buddhism/judaism

Secularism is neutral. It includes that all are free to live by their religion, it just means that there is not one religion that is imposed on all.

I agree with the Lurkdragon.

Okay, live by religious values. However, I demand that you follow all of them, every last thing that god demanded you to do. Let the stoning begin.

Values that are objectively good ones to follow no matter your culture, such as not randomly killing people = good for everyone.

Values that are only good ones to certain cultures and religions, such as worshiping such-and-such a god = certainly good for some, but do it on your own time and don't force me to adhere to it.

Everybody wants everybody else to live by their own personal values. A democracy is the fairest way for people to butt into other people's business. (Every other solution is worse...)

When religions tell their folowers not to participate in war or hate, then I will believe that religions have values. Until then, I don't believe it.
