My 20 yr. old niece has been doing volenteer work for a wildlife preserve helping exotic animals.'www.chestateewildlifepreserve.org' Well, she's very petite and she's working with 600 pound lions and tigers! Although she's been well trained, I can't help but worry that a lion will bite off her head! She knows this preserve neads all the help it can get,it's a nonprofit org., and, like myself, has a strong passion for helping animals. She called me and told me she hugged and kissed a 500 pound, white, bangel tiger! she also cheerfully told me that she noticed bruises on top of her thighs from sitting and holding a 90 pound lion cub, massaging his spine, untill he fell asleep on her shoulder. I replyed , "hunny, why were you holding a 90 lb. lion cub?",and she said,"because he was so sad having to stay in the med.unit after he hurt his neck!" Do I nead to keep worrying and lecturing her about the 'Steve Erwin' case, and the 'Zigfree @ Roy' insadent? I love her so much! I nead advice!!!

You sound like you and your niece both love animals, I do too. You are just being a concerned aunt to care about your nieces safety and well being. That's perfectly understandable.
BUT...its people like you and your niece that these animals need. If NOBODY helped them then who would they have? There are risks that have to be taken in life in order to do what you believe in. Personally I love animals, I have a weakness in my heart for them and I would do the job knowing the risks involved.

That said, you are her aunt so of course you will worry about her. But... you need to allow her to follow her own path in life and do what she feels is right. Support her and just encourage her to be safe. I'm glad there are still caring people in this world that care enough to volunteer their time to a worthy cause.

BTW: I've been trying to type this since you first posted the question. (been interupted a million times but I finally finished your answer)...lol

Well whether or not she is petite, or 220 like me, the Lions and Tigers win that battle (well unless its the Detroit Lions, they suck)...This doesnt sound like messing with the animals like Irwin always did and Sigfried and Roy, well thats a whole other story...

She is doing a good thing, something she is clearly passionate about, and while your concern is warranted, are you just upset you dont have something like that in your life? Maybe if you did you would understand and know that there are risks to everything...she has just as good a chance of getting killed in a car accident than she does on this work...

She's a big girl who's doing what she loves. No reminders necessary. She wouldn't be allowed in with the animals unless she had her act together. She knows the precautions and risks.

If she were a 200 lb man, a tiger could still kill her in an instant. He size is not an issue. She knows she is NOT the top of the food chain on the other side of the bars.

At least she's not a cop. More cops get killed yearly than zoo workers. I bet the death and injury rate of construction workers is much higher than zoo workers.

I've been told I have puppy dog brown eyes... and I am pretty much all gentle like a puppy. But on those very rare occasions when I get angry, I am sure it must look like Lion Eyes to the person I am angry with.

No matter what you wil always be worried about her, but what she is doing is a good thing, and as long as she knows her boundries and the animals she will be okey. Just remember that she knows what she is doing. Also it may be a good career oppertunity in the future. If she likes that sort thing then incurage her.

I am afraid all you can do is warn her to be careful and let her know you are concerned because you love her. She wont stop doing something she cares about because of anything you say, or because of Steve Irwin. Everything you are saying are VALID concerns... but she has to live her life the way she wants. Just be brave and keep her in your thoughts. :)

If this is what she loves doing the most, then she should keep doing it.
I understand your concern though.
You could try talking it through with her. Ask her if she will be a little more care full for you.
I hope she'll be safe...
Good luck.

She's an adult. She's doing something that makes her happy. Just make sure you always remind her to be extra careful and also tell her you love her very, very much.
