Websites like Orbitz or Expedia or Travelocity are good, but I like to use a website that indexes all the other websites, so that I don't have to search on a million different sites. Two that offer this capability are SideStep and Kayak. For both, you can type in your travel information, and then it will go plug in that information in a couple hundred different websites, and give you the information for which website is offering the fare the cheapest.
I don't think that Kayak or Sidestep indexes Hotwire or Priceline, because of the nature of their buying process. They would be websites you'd need to check separately. Although I'd especially caution you about using the Priceline "name your own price" feature if you have a tight schedule: there's no way to tell if your flight will be leaving at 6am or 10pm when you buy your ticket, and they often give you long layovers.

There are none. You have to look at many websites and compare. In fact some advertize a price and when you try to book it, they say it's finish.
Find a good price on a website. Then lower the price by 15% and submit it to priceline. Either the airlines say yes or no. It doesn't hurt to try.

i used hotwire i really liked them. all though for the most part they are all about the same so just shop around. and sometimes if you know the airline you would like to fly you can go to their website and sometimes get cheaper fares through them directly. i really don't recommend america west. i had the WORST experience with them and i have heard others say the same.

Try using farechase (combines a lot of different travel search engines) : http://farechase.yahoo.com
If you're a student, you could use http://www.statravel.com/ or http://studentuniverse.com
Also I've had great luck with http://www.gatewaylax.com (mostly to Asia but they have great deals for other places too)
