Many Christian churches observe this practice.

According to the fascinating Swiss "disciple of the gods," Eric von Daniken, who penned such books as "Chariots of the Gods," and "According to the evidence," human intelligence was engineered by extra-terrestrial beings through genetic mutation. ETs from distant galaxies visited our solar system millions of years ago in spaceships aglow with blinding light. They later returned to their dark abodes in the unknown abysses of the universe. They did promise to return. Since they also dressed in blinding space-suits, our ancestors could not stare at them directly and hence the practice of closing eyes and bowing heads began. Our ancestors took them to be gods from outer space. Hence the X-tian habit of looking up the skies as the abode of God. Von Daniken has done rigorous research and convincingly exemplifies his theories studiously by analyzying the world's religions. Hence, my question: Does anyone know other spiritual or religious explanations how these practices/habits began?

I pray in all different manners - when I pray with my eyes closed and bow my head it is two-fold - my eyes are closed so I can better concentrate - my head is bowed in acknowledgment of God's sovereignty. Sometimes, I pray looking up - usually when I am joyful. Everyone is different and they pray to God in their own manner.

Personally I do it because it helps me shut out everything around me and concentrate on what I'm doing.

It is an individual choice. I never do it, it makes me very uncomfortable. I like to see what's going on around me.
