I got back from basic about 6 months ago; I went to Ft. Sill, OK from early May through late July. I trained for 2 months prior to going to basic training so that I would be in good shape. IT PAID OFF! I was the second-oldest guy in my platoon, and I finished well ahead of some of the younger guys in PT. It is not as difficult as it used to be physically, but it will still be tough mentally; just remember: it's training you for combat. Get used to some long hours.

Not that bad actually. It sucks while you are there of course, but once you are done, you kind of miss it. You get yelled at all day, you get smoked for everyones screw ups and it is 24/7. Some of the training is really fun, just as long as you dont do anything stupid as a platoon to annoy the drill sergeants, but don't worry, they find stuff to be mad at. Its just a test of will. Remember, if you sign up and are ready to go, basic training will be easy. Just give it all you got.

I was in Army basic at Ft. Jackson S.C. in March 1991. It was hard. I'm sure it wasn't as hard as it was in the 60's,70's or 80's, but it was difficult. The hardest part about it is the mind games they play and of course the physical parts. The PT was a bi***! If you are planning to join, just make sure you are in peak physical condition.

Basic training is a mind game. They will try to break you down and then rebuild you the way they want. If you resolve to never give the DI's the satisfaction of seeing you waver from their intimidation, then you will do fine. I was trained at Ft. Polk, LA in 1970.

Last I checked, in the 80s or so, it was pussified compared to what Vietnam-era soldeirs were exposed to. I imagine it is really soft now with all the liberals (bound to be some) enlisting. Darn shame too.

It's easier than it was four years ago. Now the DIs say please. And I know a DI who got talked to for yelling at his recruits.
