I have just got a new sofa and armchairs and my 3 dogs seem to think I bought them for their sole use. I have covered them in throws to avoid muddy paws when I'm not there and I drape sheets of plastic over them at night but they pull it all off and I find the dogs asleep on the sofa in the morning or when I come home.

BEFORE trying to help on this one..

Were the dogs allowed on the old furniture?
. or did they get on it at all?

Just be glad they liked the sofa. How would you feel if they hated your purchase and refused to get on it? Don't you get more value for your sofa if the dogs enjoy it while you're not home?
Okay, I know I didn't really answer your question. Maybe you can claim one of the armchairs as your own, and only protect that one. The dogs might agree to that compromise.

You have to catch them going on it and say "NO" or "OFF" in a stern voice. (Pick only ONE of the commands either no or off) It will take A LOT of patience but over a few weeks, they should get it. When you go out of the house, you should keep them away from the living room. If you can't do that, you can try putting newspaper on the furniture when you leave. Some dogs don't like the noise of the paper when they go to climb on it. Good Luck!

Well if your dogs have been allowed to go on previos sofa's,then there not going to know the difference between this one and your old one. From a young age my dogs have always known not to go on furniture they have there own beds.Every time your dogs attempt to get up on the sofa pull them down and say no loudly, keep repeating this every time and they should soon realise it's not allowed.Good luck

There are repellent sprays at pet stores that work pretty well without damaging the furniture. You can also try double sided tape. You do not have to do it forever, but the dogs well see the furniture as a negative thing. They do not like the feeling of the stickiness and do not like their fur being pulled out when they move. I used it to train one of my dogs and now he hates the couch.

I don't think you can unless you gate off the room when you are asleep or not home. Our golden retriever does not go on the furniture when we are around but she is now going up there at night. Hubby has now observed her in the middle of the night climbing up there. She thinks we don't see her! LOL! So, unless you gate off the room I don't think there is really anything that will actually prevent them unless they just don't have access to the room it's in.

they like soft cushy things to sleep on. I suggest you get them their own nice fluffy soft dog beds, larger in size then they are, and keep covering ur furniture with plastic, they might get tired of taking the plastic off when they dont have to do all that work with their own "doggy furniture"

petsmart has these sofa scrams...ive never tried it, but ive heard that its just something you put on the couch that is uncomfortable for the dog, so they wont stay on there. my friend put a long vacuum on the couch when they were gone and the dog never jumped on thecouch.
