With all respect: Some members of your denomination have a way of acting "holier than thou" and it can be a real turnoff. Unfortunately, folks can be negative and we tend to remember negative experiences rather than positive.
It's not unique to your denomination, either. The holier-than-thou thing gets hackles up regardless of who's doing it. Even though it's a minority behaving that way, they tend to be the ones that stick in peoples' minds.
Again, no disrespect intended. Just an honest answer to the question.

When I visited a Baptist church there were a bit different then others. They seemed to make it a point to make others feel guilty. They were over zealous and make people uncomfortable for no reason. Maybe it was just the preacher. I was dressed nice and have been to many different kinds of churches. This was one of the few were I was getting stared at. I didn't feel welcomed and I felt like it wasn't the way I should worship god. My mother/grandmother and her family are all baptist. My great grandfather was a baptist preacher as well. For a person who is unsure about how they want to worship some dominations can come on pretty strong. Baptists are strong in their faith and make sure to tell everyone. I personally don't dislike any person due to their religion or generalize them. I just didn't like that church and would never go there again.

Amy about the name Baptist, baptists didn't come up with it. It was actually the those that opposed the Baptists in England who coined the name Baptist for the practise of re-baptism. Mostly it was other Protestants such as Anglicans who gave this name to the Baptist community. Right from the get-go it was offensive to other first Protestants that Baptists were telling people their baptism wasn't proper, wasn't meaningful. The founder of the Baptist movement was himself and ex-Anglican preacher John Symthe who re-baptised himself that's sort of like the President electing himself or a king crowning himself.
Amy I need to know what it is that you feel baptists are not liked for. Personally I don't dislike the person who is baptist but I do find the ideas of certain preachers offensive especially the version of end-time events they claim as truth. I find Baptist theology has little room for God's mercy and there is no place in its teaching for suffering being offered up to God. Not sure if you follow me please add further details if you can and I'll explain more. God Bless
Amy please see the source below for a great story about a Baptist minister see: audiofile #17 Marcus Grodi w/ Michael Cumbie.

I like Baptists - although I don't think any one denomination has the lock on Christianity. I used to attend a Baptist church. They had the fundamentals right - Jesus died in payment for sin - Jesus is the Son of God, fully God, fully human - he was raised again in victory over death - and through Him we can have eternal life. There are some things, I think they don't have right. Jesus turned water into wine - not grape juice. I don't think it's wrong to drink - it's just wrong to get drunk. There are others, but for the most part, the basics are there.

As a Catholic, I looked at Baptists as somewhat suspicious. 'Feriners' seems to be the right word. Eventually, I joined a nondenominational church. Only after getting comfortable there did I learn that the pastor was an ex-Baptist, and that his teachings are not far removed from theirs. I still have a problem with Communion, but otherwise, my former suspicion has melted away.
It never WAS dislike.

My wife is in seminary. We grew up baptists, but most baptists we know told her that she could *never* become a pastor because God simply does *not* call women to serve as ministers.
Neither my wife nor I believe that. We believe God *does* call women to be pastors. We see lots of problems with the Baptist church in this respect, but we do not hate baptists. We love them. All four of our parents are baptists. My sister and her family are in a baptist church.
I could give more examples, but that will give you the general idea.

DENOMINATION-ALISM is the curse of the Church! Instad of saying, "Thus says the WORD OF GOD" the person Usually Says, My Church Believes, this or that!
Did you know that over HALF-of All Baptist Ministers, DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE COMPLETE AUTHORITY OF THE WORD OF GOD? [from a 2004 evangellical survey]
Does that Scare YOU as a Baptist? Knowing that Half of the Baptist Ministers, DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT JESUS SAID in Matthew 4:4 and Luke 4:4? ? ?
Just food for thought! Write me and I will give you more bad news about DENOMINATION-ALISM!
Thanks, RR, http://home.att.net/~roger459

I like baptists! I am not baptist but I have never seen anything I did not like about them....I dont dislike anyone- I dislike false doctrine but the people themselves I do not dislike - I just hope and pray they will come out of false doctrine- and see the truth. But as far as baptists go, I do not know anything that goes against God's word when it comes to their faith. It is crazy all of these denominations we have.

I have friends who are Baptists, and they are wonderful people. I don't have anything against them being Baptist at all.
But to try to answer your question, if there are people who don't like Baptists, maybe it is because they feel that Baptists are very evangelizing, and they don't appreciate that.

It's a silly notion to believe that a Rapture will rescue the Baptist community while leaving everyone else to burn in Hell's fires and your belief teaches this concept along with the idea that one must have his name 'written' in the 'book of life' in order to gain entrance to Heaven. This is all just silliness on the part of your belief. It just isn't true. But in addition, it is from this kind of teaching that Baptists give the notion that they are set apart from all others - that they are above others in the eyes of God and that theirs is the only true way to believe. Nonsense.
There is also the infamous hypocritical Baptist moral behavior which causes Baptists to be seen as fools... preach abstinence of drink but get loaded ...preach avoidance of adultery but be an adulterer ...preach 'better than thou' this-and-that but be anything but. You are all just as bad as the preacher's kid when it comes to living up to the moral standards your group touts.
Personally I don't actually dislike you or anyone else but I would like to see your preachers wise-up and sing a different tune... one that would let you see through the wool they’ve been pulling over your eyes since you were a child.
From my point of view, your sect stands out as being among the most brainwashed... It is my opinion that all God-based religious teaching is incorrect in its foundation but your group certainly vies to lead the pack for its ignorance in more than just the basic tenons of Christianity.
