Well one obvious one is that if the leaf has a larger surface area then of course it can make better use of sunlight. If the leave are smaller then the plant will need a lot more leaves to produce the same amount of light.

Basically, since a leafs purpose is to absorb light, and perform basic respiration for a plant it needs maximum surface area.

A flat broad shape is most efficient in this regard.
