The 385 series engine heads can be identified by the numbers cast on them. The numbers can be seen just below the valve covers above the exhaust manifold in the middle of the head. The 73 and newer heads were D3VE heads until Ford quit using them in cars. The 72 had a D2VE head that is a very poor design and then prior to that there were several different numbers depending on year and model of car. The D3VE head is a good compromise head and works well for both performance and emissions which is why Ford stuck with that particular design for several years. Hawkrod

Only engine would be 429, or 460
If there is a A in the serial no. of the car, it means the engine is 460
Never heard of a 385

oval ports with 7 valve cover bolts . the exhaust bolts are in a straight line , where the 351m and 400m heads are staggered and have 8 bolts on the valve covers. The valves are canted , or at differant angles and dont line up in a row.
