Alcohol has an adverse effect on your liver mainly. I never heard of anyone's brain shrinking from alcohol, my dad drinks everyday and his memories are just fine. I would look more into a chance that he is also doing drugs, I have a sister that has short term memory loss and she does drugs all the time. She would call me and tell me something, then call me the next day to tell me the same thing, for 4 days in a row. I think that there is a bigger issue here than just alcohol, I think he should go and get a CAT SCAN because if he does not do drugs, there is something wrong. Oh, does he smoke cigarettes? Those could lead to a brain disease called Emphysema, if he is a heavy smoker, that could also cause it. It could be a genetic disorder as well. There are many possibilities, non of which are reversible, except if he quits drugs (if that is the case). I hope that this has helped you in some way! Good luck!

drinking too much of any alcoholic beverage does effect the brain i don't know if the brain shrinks if he has done damage to his brain, you can't get it back to normal. the damage in already done, but he can stop getting worst by not drinking. have you tried an intervention with him? get his family, friends and loved ones. to get together with him and tell him how you feel. give him a chose to get treatment, or no more help from any of you. this is called tough love. it is very hard to see someone you care about sick. but if you help him with anything he will never get the help he badly needs. there are people that can help you hold an intervention. an alcohol councilor or maybe someone from AA
Alcoholics Anonamos. you are a wonderful caring person please try to get him in treatment. GOD BLESS you. you are in my prayers

It's possible that excessive alcohol could cause memory or other brain problems. It is possible, too, that your friend is pre-disposed to some other ailment that may or may not be connected to alcohol. Two things are certain to happen if your friend continues to drink in this manner:
1) He will get fat
2) His liver and kidneys will fail prematurely.
Your friend needs to see a neurologist and a dietitian. Good luck

Many of these symptoms applied to me until I quit drinking 6 years ago. Alcoholism is a killer. I hope your friend figures that out before I did.
Physical Damage
Large amounts of blood alcohol can impair brain function and eventually cause unconsciousness. Alcoholism can lead to a number of physical ailments, including hypoglycemia, brain and heart damage, enlarged blood vessels in the skin, chronic gastritis, and pancreatitis. Alcoholism can lead to impotence in men, damage to the fetus in pregnant women, and an elevated risk of cancer of the larynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and upper gastrointestinal tract.
Because many alcoholics cannot afford to eat properly, they are likely to have nutritional deficiencies. Heavy drinkers typically have impaired liver function and develop cirrhosis. Vitamins can not be absorbed properly. Deficiency of vitamin B12 (thiamine) causes loss of memory and abnormal co-ordination which can be fatal if it is left untreated. Anemia can occur due to iron and folic acid deficiency. Large doses of alcohol can raise blood pressure and cause heart problems.
Extreme overdoses can be fatal.
Physical Symptoms
Alcoholism is a disease and alcoholism symptoms are indicators that the disease is present in the mind and body. Other physical symptoms may include:
increased tolerance
continued use despite physical problems
abdominal pain
nausea
vomiting
red eyes, puffy face
numbness in the arms or legs
swelling of the liver
blackouts, not remembering drinking episodes

Dear caring person,
I am sorry to say, that your friends memory, is not going to improve, as alchol is, a very real addiction, and your friend, would benefit very much, if you can get him in a good AA, program!
At first, he will be resentful, and angry!! Hang in there, you will end up being a hero, to this friend!! I care what happens, as I have been there myself!
God Bless you for caring about his health, You are a very good person!!

When you drink that much it starts affecting your whole body and some of the damage may not be able to be fixed. Eventually it will eat away at his liver he and will start losing his hair. As far as helping him the only thing that will help him is to get him into a rehab house that is long term as fast as you can.

In order for him to stop, he will have to check himself into rehab/AA or some kind of twelve step program. That is really cool of you that you care. Keep on showin' him support. There could also be some depression going on with him. So he might want to go see a doctor about that too.

I don't think drinking beer will hydrate his brain. Alcohol kills brain cells, he needs professional help. Please talk to him, and convince him to get into a program because whether he believes it or not, he's an alcoholic.
He's lucky to have a friend like you, don't give up.
good luck
