Kids need to play to learn. I say let them play as much as possible during the day. It gets their energy out and helps them fall asleep at the end of the day. It battles obesity by staying active. It is a good life lesson to help them stay active as adults. Their fine and gross motor skills are enhanced. Just to name a few of the benefits of play....

I agree with the pp, as long as homework and chores are completed, let them play as much as they want. Take video games and computer away if need be. If they have a problem, let them earn computer time by doing so many hours of play time. For every hour playing, they get 15 minutes of computer/video game time. And keep a chart if necessary.

Time spent on the computer is much better than time spent watching TV. Even limit educational TV. Not more than 30 minutes of TV.

Active play is very good for learning about the world. And playing with you is better yet, when you can manage it.

Children learn through play so really, they should be playing all of the time iwth the world around them. I don't think children under six should watch TV. There are numerous studies that show that the detrimental effects of TV far outweigh the positives of even the educational shows for children until they are six. Of course, six is charting a developmental level so that may vary slightly for different children.

I guess this will depend on age and responsibilities. When I was about 1-3 life was easy. My parents did teach me things during my play and answer questions I may have. As, I progressed in age I began to learn more from my parents and eventually had to take out the trash. When my work was done, then I could have fun. When I started school, then I was taking out trash, washing dishes and doing my Homework, then it was play time. Later it was trash, dishes, mow yard, homework, and then play. Many times my friends and myself, we work together on our "Chores" and it make things go easy, maybe not any faster, as we help at every house (We just finished each house faster), but, we learned to work together as a team.
