I would immediately get rid of such a boyfriend!

Cats do learn by experience that is true. But the experience has to be more impressive. You do that several more times and your cat thinks it is a game.
What you can do (but it takes a lot of patience) is: you sit next to the fridge and open it. Every time your cat approaches and gets in, you scare him with loud hissing and you blow strongly and directly into his face. I have had good results with this method.
But you might have to do this repeatedly.
Good luck!

cats are always curious and he probably knows there is food in there also. It's something you will probably have to put up with but you should not leave the fridge door open - just get your stuff out and close it and he shuld not bother you. I don't think shutting him in will break the habit - this not a nice thing to do to anyone. Just gently nudge him aside when he tries to get in or pick him up and place him in another room and he may get the message.

My cats HATE the fridge. Whenever I open the fridge door they run for some reason. I would suggest maybe squirting your cat with some water whenever she goes near the fridge. That'll teach her that the fridge is something bad and not a toy.

Please don't let your cat go in the fridge, there is so much bacteria on their paws and the fur can get all over the food, to break him of the habit just watch him more closely and ask your boyfriend if he would like it if someone slammed the toliet seat down on his d k tell him that this is a method to break boyfriends of leaving the toliet seat up!!

why the hell did you shut your cat in the fridge? that could kill him you asshole!
I don't know why cats like to go in the fridge, maybe because if the house seems fine to us its hot to them(remember they always were a fur coat),trying wearing a winter jacket aroun the house for a little bit and you'll probably get hot, the fridge is cool so it proabably feels good to your cat

There must be something I don't understand here. What about germs? Your cat with paws that have been scratching in his poopy litterbox, getting into your fridge where your food is. I know someone whose cat gets on the counters and I will not eat at their house.

my cat used to always try to climb up in the fridge when i had the door open, too. i think she was just curious, to be honest! maybe she knew that's where all the food comes from!
your cat might grow out of it- a lot of things that my cat used to do, she's stopped doing now.

My cat tries to go anywhere that opens: fridge, cupboards, dishwasher, etc. Careful not to shut it in there by accident. It is just a matter of curiosity that they do that.

Mine did that when she was little, I was always afraid I was going to not see her do that and she'd get hurt. So one day I shut the door behind her and set the timer for 5 minutes so she would get cold but not suffocate. Sounds mean I know, but it worked.
