It is both a book and a DVD, but since several other people have already given detailed answers to your question, I will focus on the answer given by "Bummer" who says that global warming is just a natural cycle. Gore addresses this idea specifically in the documentary, and gives some extremely strong scientific evidence for thinking that this is not just part of a natural cycle. I've answered several questions related to global warming, and looked at dozens more. One trend is very clear: The people who criticize Gore's position never give specific arguments against Gore's specific points. They always speak in terms of vague generalities and never give any references to legitimate scientific data that supports their position. Gore gives detailed arguments and offers many references. His critics need to do the same if they want to have any credibility.

Don't believe everything you see or hear about this documentary, it's not entirely true. Yes, Global Warming is real but it's more natural that it is induced. Truth is many scientists have their own conclusions about GW that counters Gore, but are afraid to speak out publicly for fear of losing their funding. Gore himself has actually come out and said something to the effect of - if it doesn't fit our agenda, find a way to make it fit. Don't get me wrong, it is real, but it's like asking "If I leave my AC/heater ON while I drive, will my car use more gas?" Answer, technically yes more gas will be used BUT the difference in the amount is so minuscule there is no accurate way of measuring the difference, thus leading to a controversy. It's a natural cycle that occurs every so many tens of thousands of years..and what about increased solar flare activity, some thing we have no control over? If industry was around during the time of the Ice Age, Gore would be blaming that on man too.

Got this myself a couple of days back, but haven't had any time to watch it (exams and all). My prof, however, has seen it and says it is excellent. Here's the official website for the video:
