Protestantism" derives from Catholicism?

I heard something about protestants coming out from the fact that Catholics at the time wouldnot let poeple touch the Bible and how priests would take advantages of people, take monEy from them; also this crap about being forgiven if you confess and being killed if you got caught with the Bible. Basically i just want to kow where Prostestants come from. Serious AnswersPLs!

Just a note to tag on to the rest of the responses here, Protestants originally did not see themselves as "breaking away" from the Catholic Church. They were 100% Roman Catholic, but "reformed according to the Word of God". The church split, with each side eventually clarifying its own position.

Its a pretty long story but here is the gist of it:
Catholics were the Christian community from the time Jesus died until the 1600s. The Bible was being written out from about the third century painstakingly by monks. They did the entire Bible by hand each book was totally precious. They were chained to the lecterns, in the Church, so thieves (yes there were thieves in those days too) wouldnt take them.
Henry the 8th decided that he didn't want to be married to his wife Catherine, she hadn't produced an heir and he loved Anne Boylen so he asked the Pope for a divorced from his wife. The Pope of course said no for obvious reasons, you don't divorce your wife just because no heirs happen. Anyways, Henry went a bit weird and decided since he was King, he would start his own religion with clergy that would do what he asked them to do. That is the Anglican faith of today.
ThenMartin Luther, who was a priest, put up writings on a Church door complaining about abuses within the Church ,for some of them he was right but a council would have straightened most of them out. In those days communications were poor. One of them was the 'selling' of indulgences. Indulgences are prayers that help take the punishment away due to sin, its not for sale, but many of the so called priests in those days didn't really have vocations for priesthood and were looking at ways to make cash.
In those days first born son was the heir, second born son was a clery and the third born son was a solider, even if you didn't want to be..lame but true.
So Guntenberg had just invented the printing press and Luther was having his version of the Bible with some books removed and some wordings changed and was distributing them out to the people in Germany. These are the Lutherans of today.
So of course like any organization in power there was a lot of people that didn't like the Catholics.
Henry the 8th started prececuting the Catholic population. If you weren't converting over to his new religion you were dead, Churches were destoryed and there many martyrs including Becket and Campion to name a few of the ones in England.
That is just part of the stuff that was going on but yes, that is why it is called protestantism they were protesting.

To the point of your serious question Protestantism is not a branch of Christianity but a fallen away portion of the Catholic Church. All first Protestants are still known as heretics for teaching new doctrine which contradicts original Christian belief.
Modern day Protestants have been raised in a culture which knows no difference therefore it is not right to say they are all heretics as they have not been give an opportunity to accept or deny the fullness of Christianity. Protest-ant. The name indicates the roots. The things you pointed out were some of the reasons for people protesting the Catholic religion. The priests used to put prices on forgiveness during confessions. Each sin would be considered and then a monetary amount was charged for their forgiveness. Catholics still believe that reading the Bible should be left for those "learned individucals," who have been taught to interpret it "properly." And people probably were killed for trying to actually read it for themselves. In fact, people were killed by the Catholics for a lot less than that. A primary example of this was the threatened death of Galileo if he didn't bow down to the church and admit his error when he proclaimed that the earth wasn't the "center of the universe." The list of autrocities of the Catholic Church continues until today, with the latest being a very embarassing remark made by the Pope regarding the Muslim religion.

Was it over 'not touching the Bible, priests taking money? Those assertions are new ones on me for now.

What Luther complained about, the 95 points he 'complained about by posting them on a church door in Germany (10/31?), I do not currently know them .

I believe it would be safe to say that the first Christian Religion was Catholisism. Catholic Church leaders told their parishoners the word of God - most people were illiterate - reading being a pasttime of the wealthy and clergy. Martin Luther, a German Monk decided that he no longer wanted to follow the laws of the Catholic church, and nailed his ninety - five theses on the church doors. He then married an ex - nun, to show other Catholics that he truly practiced what he preached. The movement spread to France, with the Huguenots - similar to present day Presbyterians - and soon all over Europe. King Henry VIII contributed to further breaking's from the Catholic Church when he formed the Anglican church - making himself the head of it ( different history lesson). Soon this too divided. Puritans soon formed ( wanting to purify the church of England) and came to America. Pilgrims followed. Other groups that PROTESTED the Catholic church joined them in the New World. In some areas of Europe, Catholicism was still the major religion, in others the PROTESTERS had changed the religion of their country. That is why they call them Protestants - they protested the church. For many years, much of the New World was Protestant, Maryland being the first Catholic colony. I suppose that it is here that I shall end this. You have a basic history of Protestants ( If one is protestant, that means that the religion they practice was one of the originals that left Europe - Presbyterian, Puritan, etc. Not Baptist, Methodist, etc). He published his 95 thesis which he also nailed to the church doors in Wittenburg, and when the Pope denied him an audience on Luthers demand he left the church to start his own.
Later he married a nun and had children and also had numerous affairs.
His protestant stance would have fizzled out had it not been for the German Princes and Lords who had their own axes to grind with the Vatican, and it was with their money and support that Luther was able to continue his schismatic role.
Luther was just another in a long line of self serving clergy who thought they knew better than the Church and once the aristocracy got fed up with him he faded into obscurity.
Ever since the reformation the Catholic church has been spilt in two and altough they will not admit it but all Protestant churches still belong under the authority of the one true church founded on Peter and His successors anso are actually Catholics in schism.
