I am a young minister myself, and I truly believe that it is o.k to listen to secular music as long as it isn't extremely violent.
Music such as Slayer, Deicide, Gangster Rap (hardcore lyrics), Blasphemous bands that are blatantly denouncing the Lord Jesus or making a mockery of Him or His Name should be avoided.
We invite demonic forces into our minds (whether we like it or not, it's a fact) to have free roaming practices and to set up shop on our battle field known as our minds.
I'm certain, if you are the son of a minister, that you are aware of the danger of allowing Satan to play around in our lives.
The only place he can even begin to touch us is through the mental realm.
Jesus wants us to worship Him in Spirit and Truth, and I personally don't think He minds us listening to secular things as long as we keep our "guard" up and watch for the wicked one and his attacks.
I'm aware of the music scene in detail today and I see how Satan uses his demons to tap into our heads through violence, degradation of women, sexual immorality, and drugs. I have listened to the most hardcore rap and metal as well as the sexually driven so called pop music for years. If you prayerfully seek His guidance, He will convict you by the Holy Spirit when something's not right.
Just be cautious, and don't allow the adversary to own you as far as the things you put into you.
Jesus said "It's not what you put into you that defiles you, but what comes out."
Watch out, because what you put in is what comes out.
My prayers are truly with you, young Brother.
May the Lord order and direct your steps.

In His Service,
BrotherB

All art is a gift from god, music can lift the soul and it doesn't have to be gospel music although many love this kind of music, but much country music speak of God and Jesus, "Jesus take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood for example.

Many artists are christians, if your views on christianity are too narrow and do not allow other's perspective and public debate how will you ever grow in christianity, how will you ever learn to tell what is not right and that you maybe are being deceived into believing the wrong spectrum of christianity which is to be judgmental and self righteous about what you believe, also unforgiving of others and so on, this is not christianity, Jesus did not come for the perfect but for the sinners, he called his disciples fishermen of man, so that whomsoever heard them and believed in Jesus could be saved. Peace be with you, it is what comes out of the mouths of men that is unpleasing to God. Like false witness, lies in other words, hypocracy and the like.

Our minds are affected by everything we see, hear and do. Yesterday there was a big article in the science section about how playing violent video games affect the brain. Truth is, our brain is affected by everything we read, everything we see, all of our experiences.

The same is true for music. What kind of mind are you building? To the extent possible, build a mind that filled with good things, positive thoughts, helpful to all. There is enough bad things in the world that are unavoidable. Do not add to it unnecessarily.

To answer your question. Yes you can listen to non-christian music, but be selective - select only that which supports your Christian principles.

that depends a lot of you and your personal make-up. If music has a big influence on you then stay away from it. If it doesn't then there is no harm. I personally don't listen to anything with words outside of christian music. This is because I am affected by the words I listen to so I don't allow anything of offense to my spirit to come in. But, this is my make-up and the way I am affected by things. you may be different. Only you know that.

I'm a committed christian, and I listen to a bit of everything. I do listen to some gospel, but I also listen to big band, Jazz, Blues, Rock, and some Heavy Metal. As I am typing this, AFI's "The Killing Lights" is playing on my iTunes. God Bless.

I only got to know the Lord Jesus Christ when i was 22yr.

Music has a great effect on me.
So i decided for myself that i would only listern to gospel music.
There's really good stuff out there.
Steven Curtis Chapman
Chris Rice
3rd Day
ect.
But the choice is yours.
There's alot of "worldly music that i think there's nothing wrong with it.
You'll feel in your spirit what is wrong and what's okay.
If you're unsure about a song pray.
James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

There's alot of stuff out there that i'd say is more than okay to listern to.
But there's also alot of really bad stuff.

I would imagine it would depend on the music and the message. I listen to lots of non-Christian music - I love classical music - Mozart, etc., - some of that is secular. I loved the Phantom of the Opera - once again secular. I love the Beach Boys. However, music that glorifies evil - that I will not listen to.

In my opinion it is not only alright but very normal for a Christian to listen to all kinds of music. That way that get a much larger basis of community and culture.

Yes, but monitor it. If it's speaking about things that God wouldn't approve of, cussing, sex, drugs, drinking, etc., don't listen to it. There's good Christian music everywhere. Christian rap is hot. K-Drama, Lecrae, Trip Lee. Christian rock is also good.

That's a good question. First off though, if by "our" you mean EVERYBODY, that is not the case. Jesus DID NOT die for everybody, instead He died for true Christians. If Jesus died on the cross for everyone, His crucifixion would have been in vain, for He died for the remission of sins for His servants (Christians), not those who don't believe in Him. Secondly, before Jesus Christ came, in the Old Testament, in order to be right in the sight of God, men had to sacrifice animals as burnt offerings. Jesus' crucifixion did indeed symbolize the ending of burnt offerings to get to God. Rather, now, those who believe in Him must simply repent to be forgiven by God. Jesus is the Ultimate Sacrifice. Because of Him, Christians no longer have to offer up animals because Jesus scarificed Himself for us on the cross. Jesus was and is our Supreme Being. He is and was God even before His death.
