I have to jump on the bandwagon. Gaymede is a complete tool.
To answer the question, it depends who you ask and why. Different forces have different missions. Not all special forces do the same thing. Plus most people have a "team" mentality. If you ask someone from the US they will say Delta or Navy Seals. Someone from the UK may say SAS. Etc. Etc.
In honesty they all they are all extraordinarily trained and equipped and are the cream of the crop of their respective armed force.

Brutality has always been a feature of conflict in Russia. The Spetznaz troops were probably faced with a choice of the lesser of two evils: do nothing and ALL hostages die, or be proactive and accept some casualties along the way. They are good, highly motivated troops, but perhaps not the best unit to use for hostage crises.

The Spetsnaz (usually) use Sambo, and their techniques are very efficient. But I think Chinese, Japanese or Malesian special forces might be even more efficient, because they practise Kung Fu, Silat, Judo,... But, of course, it depends on the practicer as well. Jason Chambers and Bill Duff of Human Weapons created an episode on Sambo, featuring the Spetsnaz. It might be interesting to watch... ;)

Gaymede, you're an idiot. Guess, i'd want to rescued by either Delta, SAS, or Israelis most preferably by the one who shares your nationality and thus has a greater interest in your life. Russians are skilled soldiers, but prefer to send a tough message to future terrorists than save all the hostages.
These groups are all made up of extremely skilled men, trained with great intensity, and with good budgets. Can't judge among equals

You should ask Ganymede. He knows ALL about special forces. Uh Huh!. Spetsnaz were good but overstaffed by administrators and commissars. If the individual officer and soldier were given orders to do something, they could, but the oversight was too much. By the time they got permission to act. It was all over. Our special forces were finished with a job.
By the way, experts, if All of the others are so good, why do they come to America for training.

Spetsnaz don't think, remember the auditorium they gassed a few years ago? They pulled LIVE PEOPLE out of the building, then stacked them three deep, causing the ones on the bottom to suffocate from two people being piled on top of them.
Send the US, SAS, or Israelies in to save me!

I believe that was actually the Russian police. They would be equivalent to the American swat teams and no they do not mess around.

Second only to Navy Seals... The Spetz do tend to have a pray and spray mentality... but they are GOOD.
