PKD disease is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It is characterized by multiple cysts in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver and pancreas, but RARELY the heart and brain. PKD is an inherited disorder, if one parent carries the gene there is a 50% that your children can have it. The disease gets worse slowly, eventually resulting in end-stage kidney failure. The PKD Foundation has 2 new papers that show promise for PKD patients. Go to www.pkdcure.org to read more. Also, type in your search bar "polycystic kidney disease" and research the listed sites. And, check out "alternative treatments for pkd" to see what else is available.

Do your research. The better informed that you are the better decisions and choices you can make. Good Luck!

It is a genetically transmitted disorder. It is of two types , adult (autosomal dominant transmission) and childhood type (autosomal recessive transmission). The childhood type is worse, going into chronic renal failure sooner. The adult type takes longer time to go into chronic renal failure, the second or third decade. There is no specific treatment except the management of kidney failure. Kidney function must be assessed periodically.
