yes, they do... I worked in a dog kenel for 2 years... we had 54 crates in our kenel, and last christmas, each and every one of thoes crates was takin up by loud abnoxious dogs.. And when they started getting extreamly carried away and would not shut up for anything, i just pushed the button, and after about 2 seconds they were quiet... dont worry, this ultrasonic device does not hurt the dogs. Im not sure what makes them stop but it does, and i know its harmless to them.

They do work. If you get a good brand, they have levels. First level may not work on the dog, but the second, third or fourth might. Depends on the amount of fur on the neck and how big the dog is. I used one on my dog for a day..by the end of the day, she knew not to bark. When I show her the collar, she knows. All dogs vary.

When they were first introduced, there were some awful incidents that went as follows: Doggy A was fitted with an ultrasound collar that punished it with an electric shock when it barked; unfortunately all the other dogs near Doggy A learned that if *they* barked it sent Doggy A into fits of pain.
That was reported in The New Scientist, so I don't think it counts as an urban myth.

We tried them at our shelter -- the countertop type that went off whenever the dogs started barking loudly. They were useless. The dogs stopped barking when they first heard the unit, but after that it was just "another noise" to them, and they ignored it.

They worked with my folks dogs very well. You can't over use them and you need to reinforce with the dogs that you expect them to be quiet when they hear the noise. If you carry out those simple steps they will provide years of use.
