It is as Jesus said. To be one of his disciples means that the world at large would dislike you. It means that you'll be persecuted for your beliefs. In that illustration, Jesus stated that those who are land on the rocky soil fail because:
"after tribulation or persecution has arisen on account of the word, that one is stumbled" - Matthew 13:21
They run into problems, or let the fear of other people intimidate them - to keep from following Jesus commandments.

The thorns grow and choke out the fruit. The thorns are Representative of lusts of the flesh. We start out wanting to produce good fruit but then we let worldly concerns get in the way and distract us and the good fruit gets choked out.
