My parents always liked a gift certificate and a cheesecake but most of all they liked that the girlfriend made them a dinner and enjoyed being around them It was hard to breakup with some gals because of different reasons because the parents and the girl friends were always such great friends

Depends. How well do you know them? How long have you been dating? How old are you?
Your best ally here is your boyfriend. He knows his parents better than you do, so at least get him to listen to your ideas!
Personal is better than a gift certificate, but don't get TOO personal. (or too expensive, or else they'll feel awkward). Try to look for something they already do and like, not something they're really into (hobbies can be hard to shop for - they're specialized and they often have lots of stuff for it already). If they like reading the comics, buy them a comic strip collection. If they like drinking coffee, buy them a pound of Blue Mountain. If they like mystery novels, walk into a bookstore and ask for a recommendation.
A card with some thoughtful comments ("Thank you for welcoming me into your home" "I really appreciated that time you drove me home") will also make a lasting impression.

How about a nice cheese and wine basket. Or a gift certificate to a nice restaurant? If the bf has any siblings - offer to watch them for the night that they go out for the dinner
Have a wonderful Holiday!

Well it depends on how long you have been going out, and how long you have known his parents. Maybe a gift card to Barnes and Noble for each or a gift card to places they like to go. Check to see if your movie theater has a deal for "dinner and a movie" packages. Those are really neat because then they can take have nice night out.

Ask you bf what his parents like to do for hobbies and then go from there. During this time of year, it is always safe to assume candles and lotion for women. Men are a little more difficult, meaning that there seems to not be any general 'generic' type of gifts out for them.

If you know them well, think about what they like and what they might need. If you don't know them that well, then buy a sweater or a tie for the father and perfume for the mother.

If you cook I would suggest making a cake. The fruit and wine basket is a good idea also.

If you from a different area than they are you could get them something typical from where you are from. I did that and his parents loved it. Good luck!
