I am scared to death of flying. Done it once and when we landed the first time I got off the plane, rented a car and finished the trip to and from. I need to learn how to overcome this as we are a military family

Spend time just before you go to sleep at night and just after rising in the morning to visualize yourself and your family on a flight and be sure to imagine a safe uneventful landing.
Close your eyes , imagine boarding , a smooth take off, perhaps an entertaining conversation, some beautiful sights, and then a smooth landing and when you depart someone special waiting to surprise you.
Mix it up a little and imagine perhaps a good movie, or whatever you want during the flight so long as it is pleasant and both the take off and landing are smooth.
I wish you well,
Mr. G.

I do not understand why you are so afraid of flying when you do not even feel when you are doing it. Just do not look through the window. Forget about the whole thing. You are not in an airplane flying. You are just sitting in a living room with other people, reading a book comfortably and you are safe on the ground. Provided you do not sit close to the window, you won't even notice it.

Hi,
As a captain rest assured I have three recommendatins:
First- Buy Microsoft Flight Simulator X or 2004. (Trust me it will help)
Second- Try to go onboard with somone you know well. Make sure it is a very short flight. Spend it talking.
Third- Try to convince yourself that though you are 35,000 feet in the air you are much more safer than being on the ground level in another way of transportation by reasearching a bit on safety of modern aircraft.

Hope you ride the wings again soon!
