I would find and install an old copy of Win98, temporarilly. Then you can upgrade it to WinXP with the software you just bought, if that is what you want to do. That is how I would correct the goof. It's a lot cheaper than trying to buy the full product, and then having to sell the upgrade product at a loss.

Find an old version, such as windows 98, install that and then install XP. If you ask around, I'm sure you can find someone who has it pretty easily.
For that matter, you could probably purchase a copy of 95 or 98 for $5 or so and be all legal.
You certainly do not want to buy a complete whole new copy - especially with Vista coming out (not that I care if I ever have Vista).

You don't need to install anything. You just need an old copy of 98 to put in when prompted to prove you already have Windows.
