In engineering colleges in India, separate courses are offered for computer science and information technology. What is the difference between the two.

i think i can give you better knowladge of this. for every branch max 120seats are allocated, and according to IT industries requriments, university decided to add more seats, they made new branch of IT(information technology), and they wanna give name as information technology, but this name was taken by instrumentation.so they came up with name information science.
And up to 5th sem all subjects are same, only 3 to 4 subjects are differntfrom comp science.
And most of the companies like Tata Elaxis ect prepare only computer science student, so if you wanna choose branch for career then go for comp sci , next choice make information science.

Computer science deals primarily with computers while IT is a broader field encompassing all the updates in technology involving communication an knowledge acquisition.

Cs concentrates only or more on computer hardware, its design , it's functions, it's compatibility with software and all things related to computers.
Information Technology includes working of computers plus other uses of computers like in mobile technology, defence, etc.

Computer Science is everything involving the inside of the computer.
Information technology is how to use the computer.

Computer science is dealing with the computers per se. The internal working, designing of chips, technology involved etc. Information technlogy is using computers for covnerting the data into informtion and their applicion.
Both may overlap and i have not seen their syllabus.

A simple analogy is this: information technology is to computer science as engineering is to mathematics.
Information technology is applied computer science. CS is the theory and IT is its application.

cmptr science is related to the hardware n software incl other related cmptr technologies.however IT encompasses a much broader gambit to incl communications, digitisation, e- services, military technologies etc.
