Or are there better things they could be doing?

Prostitutes are pretty much considered the scum of the earth, maybe just a step above the homeless guy with the "Godbless" sign. Second, most are considered to be infested with crabs, herpes, and AIDS. Third, where there is a whore, there is a pimp and where there is a pimp there are drugs and where there are drugs there are guns and where there are guns there are murders. Forth, many serial killers target sluts/whores/hookers/prostitutes and they end up in a ditch face down breathing mud and then dead. So, as you can see if you get rid the the streetwalking disease infested drugged up hookers you get rid of more than just "the selling of ones body for (pleasure/money). GROW UP AND don't think of things as black and white.

I think they should be sent to prison for a long time if repeat offenders. Maybe send them to the maximum security for death row inmates if they really can't control themeselves. Maybe rather than "servicing" for money, they can "service" there for awhile to help with moral. Same with the pimps, which might be the true root of the problem. Handcuff them and let the prisoners teach them a lesson about being control freaks.

Maybe public humiliation of the prostitutes. Have them cuffed in a cage in the shopping mall so all the kids can see crime doesn't pay. I think one time a town in Georgia had all the hookers cuffed and pareded down the streets so all could see and condem.

No, I think people like Eileen Warnos should have been left alone. Who cares that she was a deranged killer, (I don't care about her drama, raise your hand if you've had a happy childhood!) It's illegal and immoral and should therefore be taken care of as well as the rest of the crimes. I'm sure all of you have ideas about what the cops should be doing and yet, don't apply to do any of it yourselves. Hmmmmmm. You should know, real prostitutes aren't like "Pretty Woman", they're theives, crack addicts, child abusers, and just plain dirty. I for one appreciate that they are taken to jail.
On the other hand, though, some of these girls are under age and have been sold by their mothers for crack. Gee how would anyone find any of that out? Sometimes, the safest place for some of these girls is jail. Point is, sometimes it runs a lil deeper than two people having sex.

It is time well spent.
They get people off the street (pros & their johns) who spread HIV & other STD's, who are usually drug users, and who make it difficult (if not impossible) for other businesses to operate, unless of course the business is a bar or a strip club.
They usually conduct their "business" in the open, which may sound intriguing to someone who hasn't watched it, but it really lowers the quality of life for any business owners or residents who have to be around it all the time. It isn't fun to step into an alley or parking lot near your home or business and find passed out pros or clients, used needles, condoms, liquor bottles, etc.
Sometimes the ladies of the night aren't really ladies at all (they are male), and will rob their "clients" or even worse. Sometimes the clients like to beat or even torture the pros they pick up, and the aftermath is not pretty. Then guess what? The county has to pick up the tab for his or her medical care, the police have to write reports, do follow up investigations, etc.
If the "john" contracts an STD, he will take it home to his wife or girlfriend. Then she has to live with his indescretion for the rest of her life.
This is not a victimless crime.

Actually, I completely disagree with all of the previous posters (that are against it).

Prostitution leads to other issues/problems in society...which many people don't realize. It isn't all about sex.....at least for the prostitute.

Many times drugs are involved. Women need money for their drug habits.

What about the spread of STD's, AIDS, etc?

What about the breakdown of neighborhoods when things like that aren't controlled?

There are TONS of issues....a huge chain...it isn't about just sex. Come on. Get educated.

Actually in my town the police most often pose as protitutes and catch the "johns" who go looking for them. I think this a better approach. No customers, no demand, fewer prostitutes.

Actually, stopping pros from the streets should be banned. They are preaching morals to adults.

If two adults want to do whatever they want to do for exchange of money or whatever else, that is no one's business.

Yes, I agree - the cops should be doing other better things like catching thieves, stopping violence and domestic crimes than to be doing this dirty work.

It is a pain in the rear for the neighborhood. Why not designate that they can ply their trades in a designated area and arrest them if they step over that boundary?

lets see, 6 cops @ $40 an hour, to catch a couple $20 hoes.

They should be harrassing teenage drivers, like they did when I was young, it was so much fun to cut through alleys and get behind the cops and follow them, they get really paranoid

far better things that can be done with their time!
for every consentual crime, which really isn't anything but a morale crime, another person's life could be saved from violence, or property retrieved from theft.

and people think we don't have morality police!?

there should never be a law against a nonviolent act where the victim accepts the outcome knowing of the possible consequences.

Cops have become less civil servants and more "corporate minded." They have quotas and stuff like that now. Its kind of sad really. Cops harass citizens now a day more than they serve them.

It seems to me they could be just as effective if they stayed on top of the blankets.
