What caused the significant quality depreciation of the Pontiac Grand Prix from 2002 to 2004?

Im looking at a 2002 (58,000 miles) for $7,900 and a 2004 (79,000 miles) for $8,595 normally i would go for the 04' considering the styling is much improved inside and out, but i see that the mechanical quality rating went down in the 04 model. What is the reason for this, and what is the better deal?

Just buy the one with lowest miles, and be sure it has the 3.8 engine.that`s what i bought my son ,no trouble so far.
