I just had a physical for work and my alt level showed as being in the high range (74) The norm range on the paperwork was 21-72 so i am not extremely high. The Dr cleared me for work (I am a firefighter) and did not recommend anything on the paperwork for the level. Should I be concerned? I see on the web that the normal high range for alt is 40 but my paperworks shows a normal range of 21-72 - I drink on rare ocassions and I do have a few extra pounds on (37 years old also)

Different labs use slightly different ranges of normal, so that might explain the discrepancy.

A very slightly elevated ALT on one occasion usually is not worrisome. Sometimes if you've had an alcoholic beverage within 24 hours of the test, that can cause it to go up. If your doctor repeats your ALT in the future and it is again elevated or if it's significantly higher than before, then he or she may wish to send you for more tests to ensure that your liver is healthy.

For now, I don't think you have to worry.

Incidentally, anyone on a statin medication for cholesterol usually has routine ALT levels measured, but in everyday practice it is exceedingly rare to see an elevated ALT due to statin use.

An ALT level shows a particular liver function, it wasn't too out of range so, if you had been ill prior, it could have made a slight change like that or depending on if you are on any "statin" medicine for cholesterol they can change your level. Also, depending on how much alcohol you consume can change liver functions. If your physician didn't seem concerned then I wouldn't worry too much. BUT if you are truly concerned then go back to your Dr. and request a liver function test every six months so you can get at least a base line of your ALT.
