It is Orthodox Jews who leave out a letter in the word G-d.
Why?
Because it says in the Bible concerning
Caananite gods and their idols that we should knock them down and destroy all remembrance from them. The next verse is, "You shall not do thus to the L-rd your G-d."
So Jews are very strict not to erase the name of G_d, or any title G-d is called by even in another language. But adding the - or * makes it not a way people normally spell the title, and thus capable of being thrown in the garbage or ereased if written in a letter or on paper.
Now about writing it backwards, it is permissable to write dog because people do not normally refer to the creator as dog.
If it were written in a language where the lines alternate between being read left to right, and right to left, then people would be stringent and not erase the backwards form, or be carful to make some change in it. Do-g for example.

Yes but jews write hebrew from right to left so surely we shouldn't write dog? The real name of god is not known. Jehovah is just a way of pronouncing the letters YHVH, but no one knows the vowel sounds. God is just a word in English so to me it makes no sense to change the spelling

You are correct, Jews do not write God as we would but leave out the letter O`, they do write the word dog as the two have different meanings just similar letters.

I know God as 4 letters ie. Y.H.W.H This is how his name was written thousands of years ago as it was deemed that we are not worthy to pronounce his name hence the letters.
I work as a Psychic Healer and use God's name Y.H.W.H all the time. I have great results too
I have no problem therefore with God's name ..

Did you know that Gods name is Jehovah
Examples from the King James version Bible
Exodus 6:3
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
Psalm 83:18
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
Isaiah 12:2
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
Isaiah 26:4
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength
It actually appears in the original Hebrew scriptures nearly 7000 times, but most Bibles largly replace it with Lord or God. Apart from a few instances. But if in a few instances, why not all.

Well, dog doesn't mean G-d, and won't cause the same problems. The point is that they do not want to risk saying G-d's name, and it's a mark of respect and a reminder G-d cannot be named or known fully.
