Giardia lamblia can cause acute watery diarrhea, persistent diarrhea and malabsorption with chronic diarrhea. It is treated with drugs like metronidazole, tinidazole, diloxanide furoate, secnidazole, furazolidine.
Tape worms grow in the intestine and lay eggs. Their segments are passed in stools. Larvae of beef tapeworms can migrate to the muscles and pig tapeworm, to different parts, including the eyes and brain. The drug of choice for tapeworms is niclosamide (Yomesan). If this is not available, they also respond to albendazole, mebendazole, levamisole. To prevent reinfection, he must be careful about hygiene, including nail- cutting, hand- washing, drinking clean water and eating clean food. If other family members are affected, they must also be treated.
