...when I paint my own creation, it never seems to be good enough no matter how long I spend on it. Why does this happen? My paintings have received compliments and offers for purchase, but I always feel as though it's still not "finished". Any way to overcome this?

Most artists are their own worst critics....so don't be too harsh of a judge. Focus on your best work and keep working; the more you do, the better you will become.

Also, don't compare yourself to those who have inspired you along the way. Everyone has their own unique style and yours may be very unique in this world! Be yourself, paint what YOU like, not what you think others will like, and it'll come out in your art.

You, like myself, are your own worse critic. I find that sketching out a possible painting a couple of times 1st helps define what the end result could be. I'll also work on a piece for a while and then come back to it later. For me the painting's meaning or energy reflects my mood at the time. Listening to music while painting also helps me "stay in the mood"...preferably something instrumental. My other suggestion is to go ahead and part with a few pieces. Friends and family are a good place to start. Let the paintings become their own. What I mean is you'll stop referring to them as "my paintings" and they'll have an identity of their own. Think of Thomas Kinkade's work for example, each piece has it's own title i.e "End of A Perfect Day I" or "Majestic Morning". Just remember this is a God given talent you have. Share it. Enjoy it.

My brother's a painter, my Aunt's an artist and makes a good living from it and my housemate's an artist. From what I know, no artist is ever fully comfortable with their work. There's always that one thing they feel they could have done better. I think it comes from knowing exactly what they were aiming at when they started or an emotion or moment they wanted to convey, and of course no piece of work can ever completely convey it. In your mind it's always so much more.
I write poetry and what I end up with is rarely what I wanted in the beginning, or there's always something i couldn't quite capture!
Maybe you need to realise it's a part of the trade. My aunt paints the most amazing pictures with such detail, but she obsesses over the bad points. Learn to accept you may never like fully what you create, but it'll mean a lot to someone else!
I hope my ramblings help you. Doubt it! I do talk a lot of crap! lol

Art reflects who you are. Don't worry if it is not good enough. You are a person that get discouraged easily. Be confident in your drawing and it will be finished.
