The truth is each CPA provides whatever service they decide. In my practice I do taxes, financial planning, and payroll. But I also recommend outsourcing those in some cases.

Payroll is usually done at less cost by a payroll processing company than by a CPA.
Many CPA's perform financial planning. Taxes and finances go hand in hand. Some CPA's have lost their objectivity and independence because they are now selling product. Most still adhere to the ethical practice of remaining independent from sales and look to advise you about investments, insurance and other matters with a view to give you unbiased advice.

Those that perform traditional tax/accounting function (i.e. private and public practice) often include financial planning and sometimes provide payroll services.

Many CPAs do not remain in traditional tax/accounting positions, however. Individuals often become, for example, controllers, internal auditors, work in corporate tax departments.

So.....the answer is there are many variations.

I've notice that the bigger the firm, the better chances that they do offer financial planning services but not payroll services.

While the small firms offer payroll services but not financial planning services.

Either way, it's going to be cheaper for you to use a payroll service like Paychex or ADP.
