We have snow days. If the roads are too bad to drive on we have a missed day of school. Sometimes they only give a 2 hr delay that allows time for raods to clear.
The roads have to be covered with at least 1 inch of snow and some ice.
We also have scheduled snow days. Meaning in like March, April and May, we have days when students get off if there were no snow days. If there were snow days then it is a make-up day.

Yes, we have snowdays, but like the above answers pointed out, a measely 2 inches isn't going to get you out of school. More often than not, we'll get delays, where they'd have us come in 2 hours later in order to give the plows time to get out and clear the roads.
Where I'm from, we've actually gotten less snow in the last 10 years, and as a result, less snow days. About the middle of January we usually had a cold day or two, where the temp and the windchill was too cold for kids to be standing outside waiting for the bus. We even had an ice storm that coated everything with a minimum of 1/4 inch of solid ice (the trees looked really neat), but they had school that day, on time. Three buses went in the ditch that day, so they called off school completely the next day, when the roads turned out to be almost dry from the first day's melt.

I'm a school bus driver in Michigan. We never have school off unless the bus can't drive down the back roads. Which only happens once in awhile when there is either to much ice on the road or 8 or 9 inches of snow.We are use to driving in these conditions and we are good at our job. Last year we had a snow storm and they didn't call school off and 7 different drivers got stuck. But they were all pulled out and every kid got home safe. We have like 5 days that can be snow days.Anymore then that they add on to the end of the school year. But that never has happen in the 6 years I've been there. Dam I love my job.hahahaha When I mean once in awhile I mean 2 or 3 days a year. That is the norm for our town.

When I went to school in Chicago it was rare, but we had firm rules. A Blizzard would close the schools, hence a free day. But the rules in Chicago when I was a kid was colder than -4 and Schools closed, warmer than 90 schools closed.
In Upstate NY in the farm reigions the school is in the middle of nowhere and a bus takes everyone. There are almost NO snow days, as compared to the nearby city where kids walk or take public transportation, where they get off after a fresh blizzard.
So it depeneds on the School System and how they work it.
Out in the sticks they are ready for it and the roads are ALWAYS clear as they have snow plows running in both directions every 30 minutes. In the cities they aren't as effiencent nor do they have the resources becasue of all the streets.
Out in the farm reigions you have maybe a total of 100 streets for the entire county and most of these are highways. In the city you have thousands and thousands of little streets.
In Los Angeles we closed for nothing except maybe an Earthquake, which only happens every 20 years. It can rain buckets and the streets fill curb to curb and schools are open.

Mmm. I've lived in several states over the years. Many places call a snow day on what would be an average day in Michigan.
When I was a kid, I can recall only ONE snow day. That was when I was a senior. I didn't even know it was, and I walked 3 miles to get to school that day.
When my kids were little, if the snow was whipping sideways across our windows and you couldn't see across the street, I always told the kids to go back to bed. Worried about it later. (Always, would find it was a snow day.)
On "iffy" days, we watched TV and/or listened to the radio to find out. They didn't close those schools for wimps, boy!
It seems they close the schools when the snow is too high for a car to pass thru it. Cars don't seem to go anywhere when the snow is higher than the undercarriage.

Yes there are snow days to cancel school. I live in upstate New York , where we get a lot of snow!! The school year is three days longer than required, in case school needs to be canceled for snow (so up to 3 snow days). After that, if school needs to be closed for snow, they take away vacation days (spring break, etc.). The school distric superintendent has final call to cancel for snow.
One way they decide is if the snow is removed and also if the buses cannot make it through the snow.

Actually, snow days are determined by the bus company.
If the bus company thinks that it is too dangerous because of the ice, or that the roads haven't been plowed.
We just recieved our 2nd snow day in 12 YEARS. We usually get one huge snowfall in the beginning of december, that is usually the snow day if we are lucky, but then the temperature always stays around 1-10 degrees, so no more snow, just cold.

I live in Toronto, so it is snowy.
Snow days get called when the snow can not be cleared on major streets before a certain time in the morning, of if there is a certain amount of snow expected to fall before 3pm (thus trapping kids at school). Not sure on the exact numbers, but that is the theory.
