I'm a Brit currently in Afghanistan.
-An average soldier will receive £50-£60 a day basic pay
-Long service allowance of anything between £6 a day to £20+ a day. This is incremental, every 300 days spent away = going up a level. I'm on level 3 with 700+ days away and that's worth about £12 a day
-Tax free allowance, works out to £12 extra a day. This was only recently introduced by the government to bring us in line with our american counterparts
-Specialist pay, such as Para pay or diving pay: I get £4.57 extra a day Para pay, which I also get in the UK.
-Lads living in Barracks don't pay food £3.50(ish) a day and they shouldn't pay accomodation either (£1-£1.50 a day) although I have been charged this in the past. People living out don't pay either of these charges anyway.
In the UK I take home about £1400 after tax, out here it's around £1700, rising to around £2000 when we eventually receive the tax-free allowance. Still not sure if that's being paid into our wages or given in a lump sum on return to the UK.
£1 = $1.96 approx

sorry I can't give you the answer you want, however what I would like to say is that it will never be enough. If you decide to become a soldier and fight for your country its not for the money (although that does help).

Taking into consideration that a serviceman's day is 24 hours long, his earnings are less than the minimum wage.

It totally depends on the rank of the Soldier/Marine in question. In addition to his/her rank, it also depends on where his.her permanent duty station is...
