Buy a Pinnacle AV/DV kit. Everything yo need in one box - analogue video hookup (VHS, etc.), digital video hookup (Firewire) and Studio software for capturing, editing and compiling. Usually retails for around $100.

The best way is to find a family member or friend who has a digital camcorder, some are able to take the video from an analogue source and convert it via firewire to digital video. You can then edit the video using microsoft movie maker, and then burn onto dvd when done.
