Hey Dude,

There is nothing to be worried about. I ain't a huge fan of needles but in the last year I have had more needle sticks that I have had in the rest of my life and I find if I look the other way and concentrate on my breathing I can get through it.

They will not hold your arm down because it makes the blood drawing process a lot more difficult because there will be toom many hands and arms in the way of the person taking the blood but what they may do is put a cupped hand under the elbow of the arm being used, this was you don't feel as if you are being held down and the arm is still accessible.

The needle does not hurt, it is just a quick sting.

Yes, you can take a friend, or anything else to distract you like a book or walkman or even a teddy bear. No one is too old for a teddy bear.

I have been afraid of needles all my life, and I was in the army so I got used as a human pincushion fairly regularly. I do several things. 1. I ask the staff for the best person and tell them it's because I am very afraid. This reduces the chances of someone having to try to stick you twice. 2. Once the staff is alerted there's usally someone good who will chat with you while they do it in order to keep your mind off of it. If you pass out, like I have, then ask to lie down while they draw you blood. Finally look at something else. DONT CLOSE YOUR EYES. Closing them heightens your other senses so you feel it more. If you just look away and fixate on something else. Hope this helps.

Yes, you can bring somebody to distract you.

Don't look at the needle or the blood, and think of something else. If you don't move, most nurses find the vein easily and it's just a quick sting.

Nothing to be scared about.

I had 3 injections a day with ivf treatments. It does get easier, trust me. Take your mind to another place. Think of the BEST thoughts you have experienced. Perhaps a pleasant memory. The injection itself is far less than the fear it brings about.

DONT work yourself up. I always seem to get nervous in the waiting room or waiting for the doctor to come in the room to get blood drawn. It doesn't hurt as much as i tell myself it will. Just relax and its perfectly fine to bring someone with you.
