I watched a documetary on this a few years ago. In it, it was explained that most Kenyans are poor and see running as the only way to succeed in life. So those who are talented enough are extra motivated to get out there and train. And they train very very hard! It's almost a religion. They even shun on those who have the ablility to run but choose not to. Even if they arent elite caliber runners. Also all their heroes are local and world famous successful runners. So I guess you could say that they are a product of their environment and genetics.

He told me that Kenyans grow up running every place, all times. To and from school, to the market, up and down hills. It's a way of life. They are trained from the time they are able to walk to become great runners.
