If you go to your local humane society, you will be able to find a perfect kitten, and save it's life at the same time. Any shorthair cat will have limited shedding. I don't know of specific breeds that have limited shedding, but shorthairs are obviously going to shed less.

Go for temperment. That is the MOST important. Look for one that is not the runt of the litter. May have health issues down the road. Check out the disposition prior to selection. Look for one that is not withdrawn.
Plus Persians don't shed too much per say but they matt up like crazy. I had to do a shave down every 6 months. try a Conish Rex breed or a devon rex. They don't shed as they have tighter curly hair not too long but Devon's are real cute and playful. Remember cats cannot promise to want to play at age 12-14, but your "gut"feeling on a well rounded cat from the beginning of litter selection is gonna be the best ;)
Good luck and remember to spay and neuter your sweet cat.

Himalayan are great. They are a mix between a persian and a siamese. So they have the markings of siamese but are fluffy. They actally shed less than short haired cats, and shed in clumps of fur, not small individual hairs. Get a boy; they are much more playful longer than females, and females can be snooty at times. My female persian is and my himalayan is soooo much fun and super cute. He is tan and grey, with blue eyes. look at these pics.

Get a ferret, they never stop being playful. Seriously though all cats are cute and if they are kept in a domestic environment don't lose the ability to play. Feral cats tend to forget how to do it. But they all slow down as they get older. Rather than going for a particular breed check out your local rescue centre. None pedigree animals tend to be tougher and have less health problems.
Have fun with it, and tell your dad he made the right choice.

Unless your willing to pay alot of money $500 or more the breed doesnt matter.
There is DLH (domestic long hair)
and DSH (domestic short hair) they can be free from the paper or less than $100 from a local shelter.
The playfulness and energy level of a cat varies but not by its breed but by its age, sounds like you want a kitten that will stay a kitten, thats not going to happen. Cats can be more energetic based on the diet it eats, and keeping it healthy. We feed our kitten a raw meat diet of ground beef, pork, and chicken, stew meat and chicken necks. Occasionally he gets liver and and heart for added Taurine and a chopped fish fillet every other week or so.
with bones like chicken necks

I would definitely go for a short-haired cat if you're worried about cat hairs. Devon rex are really cute (or dead ugly if you don't like them); cornish rex are nice too. Both very playful and active. But a nice rescue cat is good because then you know you are offering a loving home to a cat who really needs it.

defenitly get a male if you want playfull.
all cats are cute so just pick the one you fall in love with
male cats have a tendancy to be more cuddaly and playfull than females. but their can be exeptions.
female cats spray aswell so to get any cat to stop get them neuterd, usually about 6 months their ready to.
