Yes, absolutely! I am in the UK and as far as I am aware it is illegal here already.

I think I was aware that it was done in some States of the USA but didn't realise how widespread it was till coming on Yahoo Answers. Horrific. It is amputation, to put it brutally but honestly.

I know outdoor cats are far less common in America than they are here but I have been appalled to realise how many Americans de-claw their cats and then let them outside - pretty much tantamount to a death sentence in areas where predators such as raccoons abound and the poor cats have no chance in Hell of defending themselves!

If people care about their furniture first and foremost then to me the answer is plain - they should never, ever, ever have a cat!

You can buy "imitation" cats now, sort of toys, really, but they can look very lifelike. I think that's what the de-clawing ignoramuses (think I may have spelled that wrong, sorry!) should do - after all, their attitude is evidence that they regard a cat as a home decor item rather than as a living creature.

There are also so many humane ways to deter cats from clawing furniture - but I guess the advocates of de-clawing are maybe just damn lazy and can't be bothered trying them.

If you have cats, they rule!!! We have four cats who organise our lives and our three piece suite has been clawed to bits over the years. While we're not slobs who don't care what our house looks like it certainly doesn't rule our lives, or our cats' lives. What we do is buy cheapy throws from Argos to cover up the damage - they only cost around £12 and so are economical to replace on a regular basis.

Cats are the best!

Yes YES YES YES!!!!!
de clawing of cats, must be banned everywhere
it is already banned in many US states , and in UK and Europe .

de clawing a cat is removing, ALL its toe's surgically
( not just clipping the nails )

resulting in a crippled cat
Both mentaly and physically
often has chronic pain

walking on its amputated knuckles
this cat can not defend it self

will not socialise well ,
(with other household cats )
it cannot climb , or jump

Has dificulty in grooming itself
and cleaning its bottom

a de clawed cat will often bite,
as its only means of defence

This practice is CRUEL and unnessesary

If they want a pet cat, why not have, a stone effigy . .
Instead of de-clawing a real live animal .

There are many ways to prevent a cat from clawing the furniture or scratching you ,
without this barbaric method being used ;

Yeah, they should ban it. Why do something like that? Anybody who loves cats will tell you that claws are part of what makes a cat a cat. Surely someone who thinks that cats are better without claws would be better off just not having one.
Maybe it should be part of the deal that anyone who wants their cat de-clawed has to have their own fingernails surgically removed at the same time.

But ask me again next time I find claw marks on the bonnet of my car ;-)...

Yes. Claws are a pretty essential part of a cat, so if you have a problem with them, cats are not for you - better to get a pet that you can love without mutilating it.

Yes, it should. It's illegal in several countries, which speaks for itself. Animal groups have also spoken out against it.The only reason for declawing should be a medical reason - deformity which is causing pain, for example. Cats can be taught not to scratch furniture. This is a cruel practice which causes pain & distress to the cat.

I didn't realise "people" did this. But yes...these "people" deserve to be de-nailed too, just to see how they like it. Seriously, if you are ignorant, DON'T HAVE A PET!!! To think the Ancient Egyptians used to consider cats as demi-Gods...are we going backwards or forwards in terms of progress, I wonder? I hope one day Darwin is proven right and morons like these just die out of the gene-pool.

p.s. Castration for cats is not barbaric or in the same league as this stupid practice. In fact, non-speyed female cats are more likely to suffer from health issues...not to mention stray cats who suffer.

Yes it should. People are so worried about their precious furniture and never think about what can happen if kitty ends up getting outside and into a confrontation. Unfortunately without claws kitty will lose the fight and possibly be killed.

yes, declawing is very painful for a cat both physically and emotionally. it can actualy cripple your cat. cats that are declawed often feel like they can't defend themselves so they sepnd their hole lives in high places to feel safe, there was a case where a cats claws were removed and it was so painful cat stopped using its front paws till the elbow joint froze and the cat had trouble walking

This has to be one of the sickest , most barbaric practices that i have ever heard of . People who commit these attrocities should be held accountable for their actions with a penalty equally as barbaric doled out to them . My heart bleeds for the poor animals who are unfortunate enough to be homed with these idiots .
