So many questions are answered by people telling us to trust in God. Why do people believe in this stuff? What evidence is there?

If I was to say the woman next door is the living embodiment of the creator of all things is it any more unbelievable than saying the same thing about some bloke who died two millennia ago?

Nobody believes in Zeus, Apollo or any of the Roman or Greek gods any more, so why this one?

There's no point in trying to convert me. You'd have more luck trying to get me to believe the Clangers are real.

Exactly.

The Greco-Roman gods lasted for a millenia or so, before they were replaced with something more up to date, while Christianity has been knocking aorund for a couple of millenia.

In the year 4000, you can imagine people looking back and smiling knowingly, as one does at a rather stupid friend, at the thought that 'ancients' in the year 2006 used to worship a god.

And the reason you don't believe in the Clangers is that you don't have faith :)

Since you have added the last comment that there is no use in trying to convert you, I have one very important piece of advice for you -- REALLY ENJOY THIS LIFE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE because you are going to hate eternity after the judgment day. I base this comment on God's Word not my opinion.

To answer the rest of you question -- there are so many different religious people because everyone has an opinion and they go with that rather than God's Word, the Bible. The reason people still do not believe in the Greek and Roman gods is because they were false and had no evidence. MANY, MANY religions have come and gone since the beginning of time. I am sure there will be many more that will come and go before the end of time. However, based on the evidence that I have studied and believe, Christianity, based on the Bible not people's opinion, is the last dispensation of time and communication from God before the judgment day.

My advice for everyone is STUDY, WEIGH THE EVIDENCE, USE THE BRAINS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN. Stop watching so much TV which makes your brains like jello. Don't believe everything you are told but investigate, ask questions. Look at the world and the universe around you, look at the human body -- does it really seem reasonable that such precision would just randomly happen?

Off all animals, we are the only one with enough brain to know that we will die at some point no matter what. For some people the need for denial / consolation is stronger than anything else.

Growing-up is pretty traumatic. You get pubic hair and the next thing you know you've got to get a job and fight off the competition. Having a Daddy in the sky and a ready made explanation for why and how this happened is a great help for some.

There is no compelling narrative, no great and poetic story to help us grasp the Theory of Evolution. To get it right we need to understand a lot of dry, counter intuitive facts. It's hard work for a fast food loving civilisation with the attention span of a gold fish.

And so on...

But lucky you! Leaving next door to the embodiment of the creator of all things! Can you ask her next week lottery numbers? Pleeease!

Well first of all from the way you have asked this question you are classing God, and Jesus as the same, no one has said Jesus is God, the names you have said are just names given to a God, that someone at that time believed in, so this bloke that died two millennial ago was supposed to Jesus, NOT God, and OK you don't believe in God, or religion, OK that's fair I would never try and convert you, because I don't like it when others try it with me, However maybe you do believe in FACTS instead, because there are historical facts that prove a man around two millennial ago went around doing all sorts of things that were in that time classed as miracles, when his Hebrew name was translated guess what his name was Jesus, now I'm not saying he was the son of God, because there is no prove of that, so please check it out for yourself,

Well, the category is Religion and Spirituality!

It's still here because the Romans tried to suppress it.

If they'd done what they normally did with religion, ie integrate it into Roman society, then it would have withered and died long ago.

Making something illegal only encourages its popularity,
Look at Christianity in Communist Russia for example.

Religious people don't need evidence to believe, if fact, if they had evidence, their beliefs wouldn't be so strong as they are. They believe because a book compiled by man in four hundred CE tells them this stuff is true.

people have believed in deities since day one really ...
ok so through the years there have been different versions, different names .... and i am sure there will be many more

but wouldnt it make more sense that since all these people throughout the years speak of something more than simply this life ...
then they may actually be on to something

i know that i believe in God through personal experiences not simply because i am told to or just have faith

Science is based on observation, reason and proof. Religion is based on unquestioning belief in what some old men have said in the past.

Hi.

This is the religion section of Yahoo answers.

That's why there are so many religious people here.

Thanks for asking.

If you were to go to a different section, say philosophy, for example, you would get a bunch of philosophical thinkers.
That's how it works, at least most of the time.
Sometimes you get someone like the what should I do retard but hey, he's sometimes funny.

Peace.

Why this one?
The human tendancy to avoid self-examination and change....
and thousands of years of widespread proselytizing by adherants.
