What a nasty lady in the shop! I think when you write "Charrrrrls" you mean with a really long "ah" sound? If you said it with a "r" you would sound maybe a bit West-Country Worzel Gummidge, which wouldn't really be posh (although it used to be a couple of hundred years ago). Did you know that recently there was a study of the way the Queen speaks in her Christmas Messages, right from 1952 till now. They decided she was basically not speaking as "poshly" as she used to. There is no "right" was to say it, and I think you shouldn't worry about hysterical old women in shops! Just be yourself.
If you are still worrying about it, then go for somewhere inbetween your short "a" and a longer "aaahh" sound.

We pronounce it "Cholls", but I am half 'Cajun,
so there is the French connotation.
Different areas and ethnicities would influence the pronunciation.
Be yourself. What will a word matter a hundred years from now?
Have a great evening!
