Someone made one for me of a moderate size (a long time ago) ... how do you make one that is really big? Are there places that sell these supplies like wood, and where do you get a canvas that large (like 5'x4')? Do you need alot of space to do it? Outside or inside?

you need two saws. A rip saw that can cut on an angel (around 11 or 13 degrees) and a miter saw.
Take a 2X4- plane it or just make sure its pretty straight. Rip the board at the above angle down the middle. Then, cut the pieces to the desired length with the miter saw (45 degree cuts-of course!). For a large canvas, you will need to make supports on the back out of straight- flat peices of wood. Put the angles pieces together as if you're making a box, so that all the angles slope down and in. Join your corners, and the braces and corner gussets and there you go!
(its really not as complicated as it sounds. If you know someone who's slightly handy, have them help you!)
Good luck!

You can buy canvas in a roll like any other cloth material and you can buy ready-made lengths of stretcher frames with tongue-in-groove ends so you can build a canvas to you own dimensions. It is easier to buy them already made, though, unless you need a certain size they don't make.

Well, actually I never made a canvas....
I always bought ready to use canvas in a local arts store. I just prefer to concentrate on painting more than to make a canvas. Hehe.
