I breed, raise, train and show dobies. They are a wonderful dog, but they are not a breed for everyone. They require an enormous amount of your personal time. They love to be with their people and don't do well in homes where the owner is gone all of the time. Dobies are easily trainable and should always be learning something new or they can become destructive if bored or neglected. They are one of the best kept secrets: most people think of them as vicious guard dogs, but their owners know them to be gentle, silly and sweet. I will never own another kind of dog after having a dobie in my life....

When I worked for the vets, I saw how sweet & good natured they are. One of the women I worked with owned a nice red & tan, and we used to tell each other about our dog's antics every day (I own Boxers), and I feel they have very much the same kind of silly personality. I think they are wonderful, too, but I have to warn you: almost every time someone mentions Dobermans on here a few people will repeat that old urban legend about their 'brains keep growing after their skull stops so they go crazy & attack people' - I can't believe the number of ignorant people who still think this. I actually saw some woman say a VET had told her that answering a question someone asked a few days ago about wanting to get a Dobe. Wait & see if you get any. Sheesh.

I have a dobie, and yes, they are a great breed. She's 6 yrs old and lives with 2 other dogs. Of all the dogs that have lived with me, she is the most affectionate, always wanting to be where she can touch me. She's great with my grandchildren and strangers, as well as the 3 cats she lives with. She would like to be the boss though, so early training was important (without using punishments, she thrives on food treats and will do anything for a dog biscuit). It is important they be socialized with other animals as well as people when puppies.

My best friend had a red dobie that was a great dog -- it's all in how you raise them and train them.
Personally, I am opposed to cropping ears and docking of the tail.
