Check this site out ... it explains " Cyclic follicular dysplasia " ... common among Staff Terriers :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Follicular_dysplasia
Excerpt from the above site:
Cyclic follicular dysplasia is also known as seasonal alopecia.
It causes bilateral hair loss and hyperpigmentation of the flanks. The disease usually starts in the late fall or early spring, and can regrow in about six months, although the hair may be different in color or texture. Treatment with melatonin may result in hair regrowth sooner, so it is thought that the amount of daylight influences this condition. The dogs are affected between the ages of two to four years.[1]

it could be a number of things it may be a reaction to flees or where the dog is scratching or it could be mange or a reaction to some chemical it has come in to my rottweiler was asleep in the kitchen and lay on some spilt washing powder it irritated her skin and she had bald patches, so like i say there could be any number of reasons but for now i would keep your dog away and wash your hands etc if you have been touching the other dog then you don't transfer it on to your dog, just to be on the safe side until it has been to the vets

Could be any of the above answers by others. The vet will know. Ask him to talk to the vet about whether it is contagious, or if you dog can catch whatever it is. Fleas, if you use Frontline on your dog, you should be alright, but I would have him ask. Once you know what it is, if it is contagious, you can do something about your dog. But check with your vet, if they are different. Some treatments are different for puppies and a 2 year old dog.

is he scratching a lot? where are the bald patches? it could be just a skin infection, could be allergic to food, could be ringworm(very contagious) possibly fleas, have you seen any on him?
If he is digging, scratching, and the spots are red, crusty, around his eyes, elbows or he is smelling bad, kinda a yeasty type, smell it could be mange. there are 3 different kinds.. one is very contagious. hopefully it is not mange but if so, the vet has to treat it. it takes sometimes 4-6 weeks or treatment. I have a dog in my care being treated for this right now.

Its fairly common for puppies and kittens to have demodex. A form of mange that causes patches of baldness. Your vet will probably want to do a skin scraping to find out for sure. Since this is a parasite, it is possible to spread it to your other dog. But, it is less likely to cause him a problem because his immune system is stronger. And, no, you humans cannot get this form of mite. It is species specific.
