My niece is in the hospital after experiencing a third degree burn on her scalp from having her hair highlighted. She had the color on and a plastic cap and was under the dryer at the salon and was burned. Any advice input what may have happened here?

I dye my hair sometimes and i put it with a lot of that bleaching stuff under a cap for about 30 min so it's really white. I've had a red scalp for about three days but never a 3rd degree burn.
Your nieces scalp might be more sensitive.
But the basic reaction that happens here is that the bleaching stuff releases free Oxigen, which is very reactive and oxidising. Normally it oxidises the double bond of pigment products (hence bleaching), but in too much quantiti it aoxidises everything. And oxidising is esentially the same as burning (chemically speaking)
Heat on the other hand enhances most chemical reactions. So if she was under the heater, the reaction might have been so violent, that it burned her scalp.

When bleach is heated it liquifies, and can run on to the skin. It is not safe to place under the dryer. It many speed things up for the stylist but often leads to uneven distribution of heat and poor hi-lights. The peroxide and bleach powder may have been mixed to runny and ran upon heating. It is clearly the salons fault, they should have kept a closer eye on your niece... Please inform them of the seriousness of this incident and report it to the governing licencing department in your country for hair stylists. I am sorry your niece has been hurt. Patch test are always supposed to be done prior to any chemical service, this could have prevented what has now happened. When heated and on exposed skin, bleach will burn it.

Hi, the most common cause is leaving bleach on hair too long or using too high a volume on the hair. Either way her salon should have been keeping an eye on her - I would get copy of dr's report/medical report and send letter to the salon to see what they intend to do about it - even if your not looking for apology or reimbursement of your costs etc you should still notify them as it may happen to someone else if the stylist is not taught better how to check/monitor hair when bleaching etc

i tried to bleach my hair myself last year. at the time i had black hair and wanted to go for a change. I bleached it two times within 24 hours & the 2nd time i left it on for a really long time. My hair literally started to fall out & my scalp was burnt. I had to go to a salon to do a quick fix & they had a fan blowing on me haha. About a week or two later i had what seemed to be really bad dandruff but it was just the burnt stuff coming off my head....it was awful... i hope everything goes ok with her

oh yes the same thing happened to my husband he had a very bad allergic reaction,it almost killed him. Good luck to your niece. was this her first highlight-if so they should of tested her . Did they leave it on to long? I would be talking with shop owner + attorney . we had to go through several months of pain, steroids, abx ,we did not sue but learned a valuable lesson.

she should sue the salon. ALL salons (in california at least) are supposed to do a patch test (skin test) for any color or treatment that is applied.
